IMO opinion and it is only that and thanks Mac for clarifying the 'independent' non-exe director' part as from reading the role of one i believe he has been brought in to draw a line in the sand, judge whether any of the offers are a fair ones and get the boat moored on the golden sands.
It's hard to let go of something that you have been soo close to for so long and rightly you would want every penny you think it is worth. A decision needs made with fresh eyes, no emotional ties to the board or company and what is best for all. Think negotiations may have stalled with price wanted versus what x are willing to pay and someone was needed to take the bull by the horns, decide whether it was fair and say 'yes'

Dep CCS Kihara Seiji says there's no contraction between Japan's sanctions & its involvement in Russian energy projects. He says that if JPN gave up its stakes, RU could sell the energy at higher prices to others. Stakes could also benefit 3rd countries.

What Kihara likely has in mind is that Japan currently gets LNG from Sakhalin-2 via cheap long-term contracts. If JPN gives these up, Russia can sell the gas for higher prices on spot markets. His claim is therefore that, by retaining its stakes, JPN is contributing to sanctions.
