Hmm. may be a tad harsh on TM! The EU has been an issue since day one with the Conservative Party and concerns have grown over the decades as the union moved away from a trading bloc to a political federally focussed one. A disastrous decade under the Blair Government saw our sovereignty severely weakened and our subsidiary to Brussels increased as Blair sought for a way to continue feathering his nest at our expense. TM from the outset has always been a Europhile and is at best non committal wrt EU. The Referendum for what it was worth gave Westmister an insight as to what the population wanted- independence from the EU and the ability to make our own laws reversing what has been handed over to the EU by Blair. Ironically i was not the Cons to voted overwhelmingly to leave with a good portion taking the view that it would be better to spoil the fun from within Brussels. No doubt some of the EU members were sad to see us decide to leave as it would embolden Junkers and Tusk to push for an ever closer political union. The fiscal one will never happen as the rich members don't want to be penalised for consolidating the poor members debt through higher composite rates.
We now have the situation where the population is sick and tired of the abuse of power shown by the HoC and can smell the attempts to betray democracy. TM is a bit like El Cid being pushed out to sea, she is finished once this is over. But of course this was always the plan - a fresh team to get us through the transition and out. We don't need extra time. we leave on 29th as scheduled under WTO and GATT covering the transition period of two years. Both sides will then have a clear framework and knowledge of how tariffs impact trade flow and economic. growth. We stay in beyond May we will have to participate in the EU elections which for somer ember states will be deeply uncomfortable as we will likely stir up trouble thereby boosting further anti Brussels sentiment. Cost wise, especially from a political perspective, the EU would be best off to steer us towards a "no deal" outcome and let us leave on 29th.
