Plastic food packaging4 Aug 2018 21:19
interesting to see the news today about food packaging and the argument between local councils trying to recycle and the plastic packaging industry. It's all down to one thing....supermarkets profits. Why wrap a cucumber in plastic? Because then it can carry a barcode and any idiot can scan it at the checkout..and quickly.
It's all a solvable issue
Sainsbury/asda say they can save 10% at the point of sale by merging, what a joke
What is needed is the food industry to adopt new standards and improved packaging quality. If tesco et al could improve the shelf life of a (short life) product by 1 day, then despite a cost increase in packaging there will be likely big savings, in terms of reduced wastage, and improved production and logistics costs.
But this has to come from the big supermarkets, because they drive the industry.......ruthlessly.
What could help this........oh yes......graphene.
