This is a subject we can all agree to disagree. Botswana aparently has 140,000 elephant population that has been protected and thrived under past president regime. Animals will die naturally every year, and the logic is trophy hunting is supposed to generate work and income for locals in the culling of these older animals. As i said, I would be surprised if they can manage this in the way they articulate to the wider public - but for sure, the income it generates for the local communities is important to them.

The moral police located a million miles away find it easy to turn our noses at the prospect of apparent inhuman termination of animals. But maybe for some / many, a bullet is a darned sight better than human suffering we see in our world...... Just thoughts here, not something I would ever try influence anyone over.

If i may, i have strong views on this particular subject.

Botswana is at or near top of safari destinations globally with Okavango Delta jewel in the crown. The area is rightly protected by Batswana and also UNESCO. Safari lodges there are remote, accessible by light aircraft and therefore expensive. Nothing wrong with that at face value. Wilderness Safaris and couple others have the monopoly; they got that monopoly via previous President who claims to be a self-professed conservationist. Nothing wrong with that at face value.

Those lodges need to pay license fees (often thought to be surprisingly low amount given quality etc). A report once said 98% of foreign tourists revenues was paid offshore to lodge owners, with 'observations' made about quantum declared onshore. More 'observations' made about how few jobs were created for local Batswana given high end nature of this business. In short the tourist business there was heavily protected by past president and his family, supported by his ban on trophy hunting etc. His preference being photo-shooting tourism - an entirely understandable position (at face value).

The BUT comes next - how much of lodge revenues (received offshore) were 'shared' with enabling benefactors is something we will never know. The extended family of the founding father of Botswana republic are currently mostly all exiled in S Africa (where that noose is apparently tightening as in they have outstayed their welcome). Their is a widely held view they raped the local economy for 10-15 years until 2019/2020 via rebates on tourism concessions and revenues, military contract awards, mining contract awards and more pertinently lack of license renewals until facilitation fees were paid, etc.

So when Jackas questions the merits of US State articles saying how wonderful the business and human rights frameworks are in Botswana, that makes me chuckle a lot. Batswana folks are largely gentle natured and (sadly) lazy. They becmae soft and lazy thanks to the diamonds dividends and the world jumped on the 'feel good' African story because Africa needed 1 success story. While all this was playing out, the eldest son (unmarried and patron of a young boys football team) and his brothers and cronies waged an incredible state capture of Govt, institutions, civil servants, business, the whole shebang.

Elections are being held in October and Govt is working hard to close any doors to the possibility of the 'old guard' staging a comeback. This effort by the former president to pitch to UK / Europe Govts to ban trophy hunting is entirely self serving and entirely 2-faced. Doing so gives him exposure to international media, something he craves. Local communities increasingly getting more revenues from tourism sector; trophy hunting is one such option. This said, I have doubts the current Govt are actually capable of overseeing trophy hunting in a well-structured & sustainable way. Greed is hard to suppre

Brad - stop yourself man.

So here is what I think is weird. A group of grown men who invested in a company 5-10 years ago which had a great story /concept to sell at the time. And finally the share price has moved up a little. And this same group of looney tunes (minus one) are declaring victory that their investment is a success. Wise up lads; wait and see - TIA. This stock has history of promoters getting in early and trying stirring everyone onto a frenzy. Seems precious few of you have learned much from this dreadful experience.

If you guys ever plan a get together in UK to celebrate major success here, tell me where and when and we can drink beer, talk Poppy poop, have a laugh and a good day out.

A wonderfully positive article penned and published by the US State Dept. You read and take form it what you will - that is your perogative. There will be substance and truth behind everything it says No Doubt !

Maybe you can tell me if you think the process in Botswana has the practical experience and efficiencies one would expect after reading such an eloquent document?

Well Jackieboy, that is such a wonderful read how can it be that Ministry issued the RFP in 2017, then cancelled it in 2018, then awarded Preferred Bidder status for the 2 successful companies in 2019 and why everything Tlou has tried to get approved there taken soooooo flippin long ..... Because the State Dept narrative says it is the most efficient country in Africa - and maybe you missed the detail of the last 5 - 8 years here, but the one thing Botswana is NOT is - efficient. But hey you fall back into full Brad mode such that if you / he finds a post on the internet, then it must be right.

Revenue is dependent on getting this next chunk of money raised. They will find a way to raise enough I expect. And they just have to connect to the grid and energise their line. If they cannot do this, then the reasons why can only be because they cannot extract sufficient quantity of gas, consistently enough. And if that happens - oh boy, I look forward to those apologies. Not than any / many of you will be man enough to offer any.

I am going to give you a clue as to why I post here. I get a great chance to moan here because it is a publicly traded company with a stock chat forum. Excuses and slow progress is not related simply to Tlou. However what I receive elsewhere is real relevant information about what goes on in Botswana, and why it is a basket case of a country. With a basket case of a Govt, and Ministers, and civil servants serving them. If only I had known one tenth of this before dropping wedges of cash into both, well I would have saved myself serious agony.

But out of the goodness of my heart, i want to share my obvious wisdom, knowledge, humour with others here. Sadly for many of you, you just keep missing the point. But who cares ,,,,, I know I dont.

After how many years of bullish and postive sentiment expressed by the managment, and endless tweets on 'making great progress', here we are 10 plus years later, short of the final cash but hopefully they find a way to get what they need, yada yada yada ..... Did it ever occur to you / any of you that you have been spun a story for however many years.... Is it because you have me to focus your anger against that completely and utterly clouds your minds to what has been going on here ?!

Look back over the years and work out how much drilling was done, the great stories about coals and dewatering and well communication - and now today, they like to tell us they are 'more and more confident'.

So the company is saying it is becoming more and more confident with the in-house knowledge gained from RECENT DRILLING, extracting more and more gas out of the coal will become progressively simpler and .....

I will be as usual accused of looking for a negative or worse - but this simply does not gel with the words put out to the market previously. And for sure it does not gel with Brad's long held view they have been mining, extracting and using gas on site for years and years to provide camp power etc. Then again, Brad is never wrong.

An example of how long something can take in Botswana .....

They really are quite hopeless at allowing projects to get moving. This is all so contradictory to the press saying Best in Africa for business, low corruption etc..
