Bruce it's a fascinating topic, viewed on a geologic timescale the earth temperature is clearly determined by multi factors and random events such a asteroid strikes and mega volcanoes. When one puts the the level of carbon ppm in the atmosphere against mean temperature on a geologic scale there is little or no correlation at all. That's not to say it is not a green house gas it certainly is, just that it's not a powerful one relative to others like methane. The things which are known stronger drives climate are the sun (activity) and concentrations of methane gas and water vapor. I know humans love to boil things down to 1 factor which we delude ourselves we can control like the central heating, this is essentially Canute style hubris, I don't believe our environment is that simple as to be single factor driven.
