Lego sounds like a man after my own heart, you can't beat a good bargain - squashed tins, damaged cereal boxes, items a little too close to their sell by date, etc, etc. We are both from a sensible generation that never had best before or use by dates and used our eyes and ears and a good pinch of common sense. Todays 'led by the nose generation' have lost their common sense and throw out perfectly good food rather than stock rotate or freeze perishables for future use. Off up to the bright lights of London tomorrow to replace the boiler in the kids house which has stated to leak!! Oh by the way I still have a fair few of those Thorntons bags left, so better check the BB dates and force down those that are getting close - yum lol. ATB.

Your story of Mrs Fatmore the cook reminded me of Thelma Howard who was housekeeper/cook to Walt Disney in the 50's and 60's. Each year Walt would reward his most faithful employees with some stock options, they weren't worth much at the time so Thelma filed them away in a drawer. She had a fairly tragic life and lived very frugally when she retired after 30 years service. If BG is your only share then that may well be the case, though you have had the benefit of 15yrs worth of divs. In a balanced portfolio - I hold approx. 70 shares - heavily biased towards FTSE 100 shares with a good yield and always taking your divs as new shares, where a SCRIP or DRIP is offered as I do, then over that same 15 yr period I have seen many of my holdings double in size, more than making up for a lower sp. With the result that by always reinvesting my divs my portfolio is worth far more than it was in '99. Plus, when the FTSE collapsed to 3500 in '08/'09 it proved to be a great opportunity to increase holdings as divs bought considerably more shares at the lower sp's. ATB.

Those who were ****ging this IPO off only a few months ago must now be hiding in darkened rooms annoyed at missing out. Up a healthy 30% on the issue price or up 42% from the post IPO lows - a nice little earner in just 3 months. The AA will be around for years to come so a good share to tuck away and watch grow. Have just seen the sp is down 5p today, obviously word has got out that I was sent an extra bag of sweeties - must have dented their profits lol!!

Haven't had a single one yet!! Will let Son have a bag of mint ones and Daughter a bag of strawberry ones, the rest will be put away and eked out so there should still be some left for Xmas. The Germans may do a decent sausage but their beer is fizzy lager with a large head - not the warm dark ales that I'm partial to lol. I do worry for those that have displayed stickers when the recriminations start, as there are going to be a lot of very unhappy people whichever way the vote goes, as I can't see the losing side - almost 50% of the population - being gracious in defeat. A No vote preserves the status quo whether that is seen as a good or bad thing, a Yes vote will change Scotland in ways that neither side has even thought of yet. The grass is not always greener on the other side, I just hope it doesn't all end in tears a few years down the line. Will be driving past Stonehenge tomorrow morning on my way up to London to see the kids for the weekend and a trip up to Yorks to see the MIL. It's all fenced off these days so you can no longer get up close and touch the stones. And a lot of it was rebuilt in the 60s with some of the upright stones now supported with a few tons of concrete!! My box of goodies arrived from Thorntons today and it contained 31 bags - a nice little bonus. Plus there were two bags of Viennese Truffles, my absolute favourite so I'm a very happy boy lol. My only quarterly payers are BNC and BP. With around 80% of my holdings I have a DRIP or SCRIP so take my divs as new shares, I keep a note of the cash I receive from the others and plough that back into RI's and IPO's such as RMG, MERL, AA, Saga and TSB. Fortunately don't need to live off them at the moment so happy to let it all roll up. Still hold Tesco and am nicely up on my original purchase mainly due to the 2 for 1 bonus issue many years ago, but it has been disappointing over the last couple and not sure if we will get back to £4 again any time soon. Really can't worry about hourly or daily movements, if I show a gain year on year I'm happy - even if it is only down to all the re-invested divs. Sept is one of my favourite months with both BT and BP (my two largest holdings) sending me lots of new shares. Hope you enjoy your trip down South and probably wise to pack passports just in case it gets a bit tetchy after the vote lol. Not sure I will ever use mine again or go to the expense of renewing it, I like staycationing far too much. Couldn't imagine being hundreds of miles away from a decent pint or sausage. Just watch Salmond doesn't get too carried away if he wins and tries to turn you into a Republic, ditching the Queen and the Commonwealth. And as for cider I've never been a fan and would rather stay sober!! True, divs are a big part of my portfolio which is why I've made further investments into BNC and NG recently. But as THT only represents about 0.05% of my portfolio i'll make do with the money off vouchers I get annually. Just make sure that if you venture south of the border for your short break that you take your passport with you in case Salmond puts the barricades up and refuses to let you back in!! ATB.

Thank you kind Sir for your generous comment about yours truly. I do try to be civil and to spell correctly, though am sure I've upset some people on here over the years. Now a chance to be a little controversial: I don't give a stuff one way or the other which way the Scots vote, will just be glad to see the back of that smug pratt Salmond. If they vote Yes then he can take them off to pastures new and I won't have to put up with him telling me how much better off they will all be if they follow him out of the Union. If they vote No then hopefully he will crawl back under a rock, not to be heard of ever again. Apologies, in advance, to any Scots who may have taken offence, but I was bored with the whole thing a very long time ago. I just hope, for Scotland's sake, that the 51% who win - whichever way that is - can learn to live with the 49% who lost or there could be bitter recriminations for years to come. As Notperfect says this deal is due to be completed in Q1 2015, with the Special div of 73p more than likely being paid in Q2 or later but on an as yet unannounced date. As they are offering you a B/C share scheme - ie the option to take your payment as a normal div counting towards your annual income, or as a return of capital which would count as part of your annual CGT allowance, the choice being down to your individual tax situation - they are very unlikely to pay it along with a normal div.
