The Seymore Hersch article has been widely debunked, too many anonymous sources. I know he has a very long and respectable career but I think he was duped on this one.
There are so many problems with it I don't even know where to begin.
They weren't blown up on the same day one was hit on the 26th, and the other on the 27th. When Sweden and Norway did their investigation, they had to send down unmanned subs because the water is to deep there for any divers. Which would mean if the US had done this, they would have had to sent a vessel or torpedoed it and that would have been picked up by radar. It makes no sense from a motive point of view either. The US wanted to stab Germany in the back by cutting off their gas supply which at the time they still wanted? really? At that time Russia was the one who shut down the pipeline using it as a political tool, saying its down for maintenance, with parts in Canada and because of sanctions we can't get them back. The truth is, the pipeline was a joint effort financially between Russia and Germany, and they had a contract which Russia was breaking by not supplying. Russia was doing everything they could to stop supplying the gas to Europe to inflict as much economic damage as they could and divide NATO. The most rational and common sense explanation is Russia blew them up to have a convenient excuse to get out of its contract with Germany. Germany had already said it no longer wanted the gas and was making arrangements for other alternatives so it was only a matter of time before the pipeline would be useless anyway. How did they do it? any attack from outside the pipeline would have been picked up by radar, but pipelines use devices called pigs https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pigging. They are sent down inside the pipeline for cleaning, maintenance and repair. It would have been very easy for them to "arm" those pigs and send one down a pipeline.
Russia is in the wrong here because they failed to honor the Budapest Memorandum. End of.
