RE: Lithium demand increasing1 Dec 2025 17:14
For future (!!) consideration, and, as a matter of interest (!!) :
Rubidium (Rb) is also a by-product of Lithium mining here in Cinovec (small part) but not exploited in current plans. One day though it might be extracted from the tailings.
Rubidium is used in atomic clocks for high-precision timing, medical applications like locating brain tumors, and scientific research such as creating Bose-Einstein condensates. Its other uses include photocells, ion engines for spacecraft, and in special glass production. It is also a component in certain fireworks, providing a red color.
High-tech and scientific applications
Atomic clocks: Rubidium is the main component in many high-precision atomic clocks used for timing global positioning system (GPS) satellites and other applications requiring accurate timekeeping.
Scientific research: It is crucial for research in fields like quantum computing and for creating Bose-Einstein condensates, which are a state of matter.
Lasers and thermometers: Rubidium is used in the manufacturing of lasers and high-temperature thermometers.
Quantum computing: Rubidium vapor is used in quantum computing and in magnetometers for ultra-sensitive detection.
Energy and electronics: It is used in photocells (to convert light to electricity) and has been used in thin-film batteries due to its high ionic conductivity.
Space and industrial uses
Ion engines: Its low ionisation potential makes it useful for ion propulsion in space vehicles.
Vacuum tubes: It functions as a "getter" to remove impurities in vacuum tubes.
Glasses: Rubidium carbonate is used to make special types of glass.
Medical and chemical uses
Medical imaging: A radioactive isotope, Rubidium-82, is used to help locate brain tumors and study blood flow.
Chemical analysis: Rubidium chloride is used in medical and biological research to study how cells transport potassium ions.
Chemical processes: Rubidium hydroxide is used as a starting material for many chemical processes involving rubidium.
