Warner Bros has scored the biggest US box office hit of the pandemic with Godzilla vs Kong, which sold $48.5m in tickets in its debut over the Easter holiday — an encouraging sign for Hollywood as it looks to jump-start business after a year in the doldrums. 

Hollywood executives had hoped the franchise film, in which the oversized sea monster battles with the giant ape, could make between $20m and $30m. Godzilla vs Kong brought in $32m over the weekend and $48.5m during the extended five-day Easter holiday period.

The better results suggest there is pent up demand for the big-budget action flicks that movie studios have largely held back from releasing during the pandemic.

More than 90 per cent of US cinemas have reopened, according to Warner Bros, although they are operating at reduced capacity to meet social-distancing guidelines. 

Godzilla has easily beaten other pandemic-era films, such as Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, which scored $20m in its debut weekend in September, when New York and Los Angeles cinemas remained closed and with little Covid-19 vaccine hope in sight. 

But the film’s returns remain a far cry from the money brought in before the coronavirus halted moviegoing. Disney’s Pixar film Onward made $90m at the domestic box office during the March 6-8 weekend in 2020, just before the virus took hold of the US. Over the February 14 President’s Day weekend last year, Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog earned $164m. 

Legendary Entertainment is distributing Godzilla vs Kong in China, where it debuted with a $70m take-up last weekend. While cinemas in the US and Europe have remained largely empty until now, China’s box office has recovered sharply as movie attendance has returned to nearly normal levels


The success of Godzilla vs Kong is a victory for the cinema chains and Hollywood studios, which have lost billions of dollars in the past year, leading to bankruptcy for the Alamo Drafthouse theatre operator. 

It also brings confidence that crowds will still go to cinemas to watch films even if they are available online, as more Hollywood conglomerates use movies to attract subscribers to their streaming services. Godzilla vs Kong was available to watch on Warner’s HBO Max streaming service from Wednesday. 

In a move that infuriated some filmmakers last year, Warner Bros decided to release all of its 2021 movies on HBO Max on the same day they debut in cinemas. 

Nolan lashed out at the decision, telling the Hollywood Reporter: “Our industry’s biggest filmmakers and most important movie stars went to bed the night before thinking they were working for the greatest movie studio and woke up to find out they were working for the worst streaming service.”

Never gona happen IMO, you think Boris will let mass gathering in pubs, regardless they're wearing masks yet force cinema goer's to present a vac cert/passport before entering? Nope.. U have more chance of controlling cinema patrons than you have with pub attendees... Firstly, intoxication increases with more time you spend in a pub, and therefore relaxing of rules, whereas as staff seat Cinema patrons on social distance planning wearing masks. It's a more controlled environment.

Aaaaah, the safety of hiding behind a keyboard, they relish in it. I've always said that for basic membership they should charge £1 for the year on this site, paid by credit card so that their details are registered. This anonymity these fools hide behind lets them post nonsense with accumulated posts which clogs the bb, because they're enticing unnecessary posting by investors.

London, United Kingdom and Knoxville, TN, March 23, 2021 - Cineworld Group, plc (LSE: CINE) today announced that its Regal theatres will reopen this April, for the first time in six months. The phased reopening will kick off with a limited number of cinemas opening for "Godzilla vs. Kong" on April 2nd and going wider with "Mortal Kombat" on April 16th. Cineworld also plans to reopen in the U.K., its second biggest market, in May, in line with current government guidance.



"We have long-awaited this moment when we can welcome audiences back to our Regal theatres and restore our essential role within the communities we serve," said Mooky Greidinger, Chief Executive Officer of Cineworld. "With the health and safety of our customers, staff, and communities as our top priority, we continue to take all the necessary precautions and abide by our CinemaSafe guidelines to confidently provide a safe and comfortable experience. With capacity restrictions expanding to 50% or more across most U.S. states, we will be able to operate profitably in our biggest markets. We will also be monitoring developments closely in the U.K. and across Europe as we set to gradually reopen across the world in line with local government guidance."

...So next week is very important, especially more so should "King Kong v Godzilla", beat expectations over the weekend!

Personally don't think so Alex, I'm also invested in IAG...and a good sum too!... which increased when it fell to circa early 90's and I topped up. Although I've seen the climb to 209 today, I based it more on good FT100 rise in general and with current "Return to Flying/Holidays" rules, ...and now also with France gone into it's third lockdown and how far they're, (EU), behind vaccinations, I can't see them risking opening their flight corridors till July/August, all depending on their speed of immunisations!

As you know the UK and U.S are far ahead of their expected timescales in vaccinations, so if anything we may have corridors opened between us and them before UK/USA and Europe... but the classic holiday destinations are in EU locations and this plays a contributing factor for majority of the working class public.

So in the meantime I'm expecting retail and leisure sectors to do better in the near term as this is the limits to the public at the moment! All IMO

Tomorrow we may see a change in attitude to the current SP in CINE for the positive if the MM's have/are done with entertaining the Institutional Investors/Hedge fund managers. If so, we can expect close of play to be between 105-110. which is approx between 5-10% from the current SP.... and we all know CINE is more than capable to do this in one day...AND When we reopen on Tuesday, the beginning of a new tax year...expect more!

Excellent news... but I never doubted it tbh... I'm really looking forward to going to the cinema on a nice summers evening with the family after a nice lunch. Regardless of the setup you may have at home...Cinematic experience just can't be beat with special effect blockbusters of this scale!

..Got that feeling accumulation is still taking place, expect another TR1 fom either Jhango or BoA increasing their stake. No other reason for MM's hanging in this range IMO... Not this close to reopening!

Morning all, well FT100 futures are pointing to the upside... prob because EU has F'ed up their vaccination program ...and the reflection on the UK looks good... as we're no longer part of the EU, plus many other quibbles they're having in regards to Pfizser vaccine.

All I know the U.S is still going ahead with its planned opening and so is the U.K... BOTH ahead of their Vaccination timelines... which bodes very well for us!

The two extra other positives are the fact that BoA has now a stake and Jhango have increased theirs!...What's not to like...sit back and relax!

IMO... it's being held here, not sure if it's a large sell... but more than likely a large buy. Very tight range all flipping morning... and there's no way the sp would be at this price so close to one large section of the enterprise re-opening for business. So make of it what you will, but I reckon by Friday we'll be closer to 110+ once the strings are cut.

Definitely big order being filled here... price has never been so calm and rested between such a small margin.... Just a waiting game and take advantage. IMO

Yep agree Ollie.... they just targeted stop-losses and the inexperienced investors will also quickly sell out wondering if bad news is coming.

Yep... nice slow climb...compounded accumulation at 2 to 3% a day will get us to 115+ by Friday easily.

Think a lot of investors will be taking their position this coming week in anticipation for the opening in U.S, sp could easily achieve 115p+ by Friday. Results are out of the way... they were unfortunately released on a gloom of a day on Thursday when nearly every share in the FT100 was in the red... That was just bad luck and pushed us down further than we really should've been.

The only thing good to take away from that unfortunate drop was I managed to accumulate much more shares.. and tbh, it would've been rude not to oblige!

Fun, I literally cannot wait for them to open the doors for business... This I believe will have a massive impact on the share price on the day!

Reminds of the time when my old man had invested in the company, (EuroTunnel at the time I believe), that had the contract for building/tunneling the channel tunnel. The day both french and British engineers actually dug through and met in the middle through a small hole... the share price shot up!

The same will happen here on doors opening for business.
