Good posts Trek, Haddock Boffin. I'm the ex-Chemist. Never used XRF though. Organic for me.
XRF will be best suited to detect whether certain elements are present or not present. The signature frequencies will tell you that. So great for 'pathfinder' element detection.
XRF will not be great for telling you how much of something is present, particularly if it is unevenly distributed (nuggety). Proper, old fashioned fire-assays are what is needed and larger sample size for 'nuggety' finds will be necessary to get accurate g/t rates.
Proper assays are king for RNS stuff. In field portable XRF great for rapid guidance in the field.
Visible gold flecks imply the possibility of very high g/t rates. This much is blindingly obvious. I expects some high grades, simply put.
