If you look at the Certificate of Incorpoation you'll see that there is only 1 share allotted with a nominal value of £1 and that share is owned by Scancell Ltd which in turn is owned by Scancell Holdings Plc.

Perhaps a bit strong for a Monday morning? Quotation marks may have been missing but it seemed pretty obvious that it was intended as such rather than any attempt to plagiarise.

Some really interesting research featuring Parsortix was published yesterday. I can only access the abstract, but essentially researchers from IRCCS Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori, Milan compared frozen PBMCs vs fresh whole blood from sarcoma and lung cander patients. Their findings:-

'Cells isolated from frozen PBMCs were representative of whole blood-derived CTCs in terms of number, phenotype, and copy number aberration profile/target mutations. Long-term storage (=3 years) did not affect the efficacy of CTC recovery'

The ability to freeze a patient's PMBCs and then analyse CTCs at a later date opens up all sorts of commercial opportunities but could be particularly significant when it comes to large clinical trials with thousands of patients.

Except it is a problem. Hospital admissions are now rising to uncomfortable levels and elective surgeries are already being cancelled. Imagine waiting for months or even years for an operation only to have it cancelled due to Covid patients taking up NHS resources.

It's also a problem for anyone who lives with someone at risk - cancer patients (2.5m in the UK), the elderly (nearly 9 million) , those who have had organ transplants in the past (50k) etc. etc. I suspect there are relatively few people in the UK who will be lucky enough to be asymptomatic/have mild symptoms AND also have no contacts in a high risk group.

If we were having a sweepstake I'd go for Janssen.

Excellent and unexpected update from Scancell this morning and good to see real progress with these glycan mAbs.

There certainly appears to be interest from big pharma as evidenced by the collaboration agreement announced today. Worth reading the RNS a couple of times to pick up all the detail, I notice they have now trademarked the name 'GlyMab'.

Not strictly Scancell related, but some may be interested in research published last week involving Lindy Durrant. It was looking at HLA class 1 expression in colorectal cancer but it's interesting to see that it was carried out by reseasrchers from Mass. General Hospital, Harvard Medical School - one of the top ranked research institutions in the US. Also involved were Leiden University who have previously published research using Scancell's glycan mAbs.

The current trial does allow for recruitment of up to 10 patients (out of a total of 40) who test positive for SARS-COV-2 antibodies - ie. they can recruit some patients who have previously been infected with Covid but they must have been asymptomatic. The trial has been designed to test Covidity in unvaccinated people and currently only around 54% of the population in South Africa have been vaccinated, so the recruitment pool should be plenty big enough. The issue is much more likely around other inclusion/exclusion criteria, particluarly the requirement for patients to have had no known exposure to Covid within the past 14 days. However, that would apply across the board regardless of previous vaccination or infection.

When there are quite periods it's easy to assume that nothing is happening but I'm sure they'll be pressing on with patient screenings and just have to hope that recruitment is speeding up. Having said that, it would be good to get an update from Scancell, particularly regarding Modi1.

Most bios have scientific advisory boards/clinical advisory boards to provide scientific advice such as Redx's expert panel, but I can't remember any of the AIM bios I've been invested in creating a Scientific Committee. Really impressed that Redx has placed science and product development at the heart of their corporate governance policy.

The CEPI deal with DIOSynVax isn't for their existing vaccine - it's to discover and develop a completely new mRNA vaccine using computer modelling and AI to select antigens most likely to give broad protection. So it's not even a preclinical deal, it's a discovery stage deal! Well done to them and good to see UK innovation benefitting from CEPI funding.

While we're having a more positive day here, a new patent application from Scancell has been published today, it looks like the new ImmunoBody (enhanced with Avidimab) patent. If so and if granted, it will extend the patent life of ImmunoBody by 20 years to 2040. If Scancell ever manage to monetise Covidity, any SCIBs or indeed the whole platform, this will make a tremendous difference to the valuation.

For those interested in the technical side, there's plenty relating to Covidity in the description and if nothing else gives a small insight into the enormous volume of work that goes into developing these products.

Progress on recruitment to the Covidity trial in SA has been disappointing and who knows what the future holds in terms of Covid vaccines, but research by sceintists from UCLA published this week appears to reinforce Lindy Durrant's conviction and vision from outset that they should also target the nucleocapsid protein.

The UCLA researchers carried out an in depth analysis of CD8+T cell responses to Covid from recently infected patients by looking at responses to all the major proteins. They found that T cells targeting the N protien were 'dominant in terms of magnitude, breadth, and density of targeting, ' they were also more sustained.

Their conclusion:- 'CD8+ T cells predominately target nucleocapsid and those responses appear to be more durable compared to targeting of spike or matrix; no responses were seen against envelope..........These results provide greater clarity on CD8+ T cell targeting, breadth, and persistence. Inclusion of nucleocapsid in vaccines may allow even broader and longer-lived cellular immune protection against COVID-19 to combat ongoing viral evolution in the pandemic.

Licensing deals usually contain a clause that allows the licensor to take the product back if the licensee doesn't develop it and so the risk of it being left on the shelf shouldn't be an issue.

Good news for Medigene, perhaps not a huge upfront payment but it adds some perspective when you realise that it was over half of their market cap at the time.

I think you're much closer with your mention of Isa Pharmaceuticals. IMO the connection is highly likely to be Cornelis (Kees) Melief, who has co-authored research papers and worked closely with Lindy Durrant in the past. He's an an emeritus professor and Head of Dept. at Leiden University and founder of Isa Pharmaceuticals.

There's no way they'd have any meaningful data for a Zika virus by Q3 but if you're right and that is their strategy then I'd reconsider my holding here.

When they made the decision to go with PharmaJet, the GET system was still in development and Scancell were under tremendous pressure to get Covidity into the clinic as soon as possible. PharmaJet had shown good efficacy in preclinical testing and with other DNA vaccines and and so it made sense to push on with PharmaJet.

As for whether they'll use ImmunoBody for the Zika vaccine, I'm not sure I follow the logic that just because Scancell have an existing DNA vaccine then a UoN academic project could and should use it.
