RE: RNS27 Sep 2016 09:38
lol - the RNS is announcing further pre-clinical work on bacterial topoisomerase inhibitor compounds, the operative word being pre-clinical. They have no choice but to use terms such as possible, has the potential etc. - it's standard language for drugs at this stage of development. This is the important part of the RNS:-
"In the pre-clinical study, Redx achieved a significant decrease in bacterial infection levels against a multi-drug resistant Gram-negative bacterial strain when compared with tigecycline, a current drug-of-last-resort used in treating antibiotic resistant bacteria."
Still a long way to go of course and as ever with biotech (and especially so here given the scale of REDX) the risks are whether funding will be available to take the compounds further and whether or not those compounds will be as effective when they get into the clinic. On the plus side there is a global movement to combat antibiotic resistance, the market is huge and funding may not be as much of an issue as in other fields of medicine.
