You can gift £2,880 to a child each year tax exempt under HMRC present rules if it’s going in their sipp. I do it for my kids to invest in their GGP investment. This way it’s out of GGP for me and into it for them. No loss to the family, no loss to GGP as it’s recirculating the same money. If they place it in their sipp the HMRC add their contribution to make it £3000. I can’t see the point in waiting until the end of my life to start preparing in a mad rush. I do it via bank transactions so that I have detailed records of date, value, time and recipient to assist the executor of my will.
For me with 3 kids, if we didn’t pension transfer then it’s £1000 each as gifts. Obviously the grandchildren can have £9,000 into JISAs. Forward preparation years in advance allows me to see their future safety nets growing whilst I still live. The position is more difficult if you are sadly dealing with a terminal illness as the timeline makes it almost impossible. Early preparation is everything.
