Taverham, my economy seven is already variable and I never knew it had changed. It used to be 00:30 until. 07:30. Now it’s7 hours between 22:00 and 07:00 but you don’t know when. Positive for me is I can't have a smart meter on that tariff and can’t be changed unless I agree. Good for ev charging. :-)

Banks were already working with eua. What’s changed? They will have “signed up” to work alongside, for and with eua. As far as I’ve read so far today it’s people tweeting what we already knew.

National grid probably can cope. I think most of us are about to be taught a lesson in supply and demand. Your very new VERY smart meter will be told to increase your rate if you load the network when it’s struggling. However, it may let you cook you brekky at 6a.m if it’s quiet. But, how would you feel if you went to your car and the SMART charger had only been allowed to start charging at 7.a.m. One thing I can assure everyone, the smart meter is not there for YOU. :-)

Sorry. Final point not answered. I think the pinchpoint is the distribution sub at the end of the street. 400 amp fuses supplying each phase with maybe 100 houses per phase. Tvs and lighting on in the evenings giving a fairly constant load. Add 12 amps at several properties charging cars on top of that and then any additional peaks such as kettles at half time and pop goes the fuse. I like the ideas of electric vehicles but I’m steering towards hydrogen as the most practical if only for reliability of the electrical network.

Taskmaster, the distribution subs are loaded well up. The cables are struggling. The ones that took priority were the ones that had a high number of faults in the previous 12 months. The old copper cables were messier to work on but imo far superior. The new aluminium ones are hard to bend, install in ducts and more prone to corrosion. I did 34 years cable jointing and can honestly say that as far as I’m concerned we’ve gone backwards with networks in the last 20 years. I can only foresee more faults due to increased loading and more supply interruptions due to blown fuses as some of the more densely populated areas are loaded so high there is little headroom for additional load.

My previous working 20 years were upgrading the low and high voltage electrical networks. They are just about at their limit. The investment required to improve on what we have is just about impossible in the near term. Footpaths are full anyway. The jointers already struggle with the 300 sq mm cable so Lord knows where we go next.
