NAME CHANGE OF ROYAL MAIL GROUP HOLDING COMPANY
Branches and Representatives will be aware that the Royal Mail name dates back to 1516 and the rule of Henry VIII and therefore has over 500 years of history. Our members are proud of the heritage of the company and the brand that is widely recognised worldwide.
Branches will however be aware that as part of Royal Mail’s quarter one financial report to the markets in July this year, the company announced that it would be changing the Group’s holding company name from Royal Mail plc to International Distributions Services plc. At the time the company stated that the move was intended to have a clearer financial separation with no cross subsidy. The company also said that if significant operational change within Royal Mail in the UK is not achieved, the Board would consider separation of Royal Mail and GLS.
Financial analysts commented at the time that such a move could present problems for both businesses within the Group. Furthermore, the separation of GLS from Royal Mail would be in stark contrast to a number of European postal operators which remain fully integrated with their international parcel delivery operations.
Nevertheless, in a further announcement made yesterday, Royal Mail confirmed that the name change had been implemented. The Group’s holding company name is now International Distributions Services plc, whilst the company’s brand names will remain the same.
Given the current mantra from the business, this development can only be viewed with total scepticism and seen as the initial move in the fragmentation of the business. The RMG Board has indeed already stated that they will consider all options to protect the value and prospects of the Group, including the separation of the two companies.
The CWU Research Department have produced the attached (Attachment 1) background document that is aimed at highlighting the facts behind the name change whilst raising a number of issues that appear at odds with other postal operators.
We hope that Branches and Representatives will find this information useful in answering questions in the workplace, as well as highlighting the potential pitfalls that are associated with the name change in the future. Naturally we will continue to call out and challenge Royal Mail in respect of its strategic direction at every opportunity and will oppose a break-up that is evidently detrimental to our members.

" Wolvesposty - ‘on that note i am off... got a new bucket from KFC. called the sharky bucket... its full of right wings and arseh0les.’
I like that one, it’s a good one for you lol. Have a good night wolves"
I can see the bromance coming! I am so happy for both of you.
@ HeresHopin
" Yawn. Lot's of us either employed or self-employed haven't had pay-rises but we don't go crying about it. What have MP's got to do with your argument, and using the example of other militants like the RMT and the Scottish binmen just illustrate my point and not yours. They don't deserve the pay-rises either. Labour is just stoking it all up to cause trouble (even though the new Government have clearly messed up as well). Awarding big pay rises here there and everywhere is just going to embed high inflation for everyone for longer so it is self-defeating. Suck it up like everyone else is having to do and we will get through it that much quicker or otherwise just quit if you aren't happy"
No one is crying my friend, we are balloted legally to take action. We are taking action and it seems you dont like it. Everything is done legally. The posties had more votes for industrial action than the PM to be in charge of the country.
We want for everyone to get a decent pay union or no union at workplaces. Lots of companies out there give their employees 1500 to 2000 one off payment to help the with cost of living.
Personally could not care for the pay increase at my workplace, I care more for my terms and conditions. If I have something why would I give it away without a fight!
@ HeresHopin
Did not mean the posties, meant for all the workers out there that kept the country connected. I am talking about everyone that had to go to work while everyone else was on furlough
@ HeresHopin
"Let's not pretend that the Union's aren't doing their best to stoke up trouble for the Country by turning down perfectly reasonable wage offers"
In the last 12 years the MP's awarded themselves 24.000 pounds in pay. Most of full time jobs in the country do not pay 24.000 per year. Lets look at the facts: RMT union has settled at Liverpool and Wales 7.1% pay rise for its members. What is different in London?
Lots of other unions have settled for pay increase at various rates above the 7%
The 2% pay offer that companies offer its an insult to the workers. Under normal times the 2% would be fine but with inflation at 10% it is not good enough and thats why the nurses, bt workers, posties, rail workers, 999 operators and other workers are taking action. If this government had any brain cells would do a deal with all the workers to bring calmness to the country. Instead they calling for action against militant unions, did not see the militant union causing any problems during the pandemic keeping the country connected. What's the matter with you people? bang your heads in the wall to recalibrate the brain

"isle ,babis, oli and others.... I told you I would call him out didn't I?"
I am happy that AngerSharkz was a leftie. deep down I knew he has a soul and he was not created by the devil.

"so, anger you quote "No I wasn’t in Unite for 16 years. But I was in Unison for 16 years."
so, you were affiliated to the most left-wing union in the country????"
Nothing surprises anymore, AngerSharkz was a leftie? Its a bit like Lizz Truss, she was liberal but attacking them for anti growth and she was anti Royal, one handshake with the Queen next thing the Queen is gone.
AngerSharkz did you go to any protests?
@AngerSharkz.
"You know my opinion. I think Thompson has Kretinsky’s hand inserted into his bottom and he’s doing exactly as he’s told"
no wonder Simon is walking a bit strange, now everything makes sense!
@ AngerSharkz.
"I certainly do listen to the PM and I fully back the growth agenda. Britain has been in a stagnated malaise for too long"
But it was the Tories in control for all this years and they fudged up everything.
we have the chief of Shell saying the energy companies need to pay more tax and Liz says no, I will give you more money because that will help the economy. I really thought you be liberal not a Torie. No hope for you my friend :)
@ Maximas1
"Bringing things to a head imo…is something I always wanted to do ,in anything I was involved in…it cuts the crap….if tonight’s news is correct, and posties are going ….then so be it…"
How big is your boat? Maybe I can come and work for you. I can pick the bananas for you in Madeira or show you my ****tail skills. I can certainly keep your lady friends happy when you tired :)
@AngerSharkz.
"You only have to listen to the speech by the PM today in the Conservative party conference. She was very vocal on militant unions and how they don’t fit the growth agenda. They will soon be a thing of the past"
I thought in this new forum we all going to be sensible. Really? you listen to Liz, I despair.
Firemen are next in line to strike, the 999 operators are striking tomorrow along with BT workers, teacher will follow soon.
If Liz had any ideas she would try and do some sort of deal with unions to bring calm in the country.
C'mon AngerSharkz don't you want the nurses to get some extra money for their hard work?
@ AngerSharkz
"There in lies the problem. The CWU should not be making or have anything to do with any business decisions regarding Royal Mail and just confirms that change is needed urgently"
That's where you wrong, do you think the CEO of the company cares more for the company than the employees? Dont think so. The delivery is complex world, without the local knowledge nothing will be sorted, you can introduce all the technology you want but it will only get you to a certain point.
AngerSharkz, if you leave to management to do as they see fit it will fail miserable. They don't follow the law or know what the law says in lots of issues i,e equality, disability, pregnancy they don't have a clue my friend.
Someone needs to keep an eye on them. Its for the best!
@ AngerSharkz
"It’s difficult to implement changes when every change the company tries to make is blocked by the CWU"
That is not true AngerSharkz. The CWU delivered almost full revisions last year just before Christmas. The CWU had few months to deliver them and Simon was the one that put pressure with revisions because he promised the shareholders revisions before Christmas. RM signed up to recruit but failed to recruit and many of the new recruits left because the way they were treated by RM management. This cost millions in training. Trust me, RM do not have the brains at local level to implement change. Management do not know the ins and outs of delivery offices. They wait for the local CWU to guide them in the right direction. This is FACT.
@ AngerSharkz.
"It’s extremely inhumane to think a company might not be able to afford a pay rise based on factual information"
its not about pay anymore, it is sad to see that the top of RM do not have any ideas how to grow the company. We have the best network in the country but no ideas by the top people. Lets wait and see what the CWU will have to propose to RM. Personal opinion, could not care less about the sell of GLS. If that's gone and it means stability for few years for the UK side of the operation I would take it.
