I think you don't reside in reality. If you cannot accept your investment losing 50% of it's value over your investment horizon, you should not be investing.

When they are unwound and shorter buy back the shares, the reverse will be true, and the sp will benefit.

The sp moves all the time, up and down, regardless of shares in issue. The market cap moves daily.
