Ps - we were talking about Lloy - my point was, certain businesses can make good money during recessions, as did I during my working years, as did Lloy enabling it to pay out all that Ppi during the previous recession, but then that's all history :-)

In my experience, there's good money to be made during recessions :-)

A bank that reported an underlying profit of £3.5bn and can make a covid provision of £3.8bn at H1, and maintain its capital position, ain't broken !!!

Given lloyds market share in the uk - any take over bid would have to come from outside of the UK - Maybe one of the China or US banking giants wanting an instant dominant presence in the UK with an eye to Europe once Brexit is sorted - another option is - a bid from one of the huge tech giants wanting to expand into banking, ie Amazon, Apple

Fact is - Lloy can currently be picked up for fraction of NAV

1st rule of 'GapWatch' - some gaps never get filled,

While we collectively accept and adjust to our 'new normal' slightest whiff of 'V' shape recovery, vaccine or Brexit deal and maybe Lloy and the market can find a more sensible level based on facts instead of fear

Reassuring LLoy showed it's strength by reported half year underlying profit £3.5bn - shame it was wiped out by the Covid impairment - time will tell how much of that provisions is actually required - IMO just as with Ppi, Lloy will manage Covid costs

This weeks observation - Banks report huge Covid provisions - no good news re vaccine or brexit - concern of possible 2nd wave,

A very basic comparison that does no include divi yield, IMO those still suggesting Lloy is 'the worst share ever' or a 'dire share' seriously need to examine their concept of investing.

Barclays pretax profit GBP1.27 billion.

"Our CET1 ratio stands at 14.2% which underscores the strength of our balance sheet. We remain well capitalised and ahead of our minimum requirements, The board will decide on future dividends and capital returns at the year-end 2020," said Chief Executive Jes Staley.

Looking to the remainder of 2020, Barclays said its impairment in the second half will remain "above the level experienced in recent years", but below the first half credit impairment charge.

Lloyds Banking and Standard Chartered report on Thursday, followed by NatWest - formerly RBS - on Friday and HSBC on Monday.
