Started this fantasy portfolio in 2016 to challenge various poster's perception that lloy is 'the worst share ever', 'better else where' or a 'dire share',
8th Oct 2016 I invited wl/newchurch to choose an alternative ftse 100 company, so I could run a comparison, since 2016 others have been added
On 8th Oct 2016 - - 1000 quid bought 206 BP. shares & 1905 lloy shares
Today's value, BP. 206@468 =£964 v lloy 1905@46.3 =£882
~~~~~~~~~~ In April 2017 invest4life suggested I add glencore - - on 22-4-17 - 1000 quid bought 335 glen shares & 1553 lloy shares
Today's value, RR. 1073@289 =£3101 v lloy 3367@46.3 =£1559
~~~~~~~~~~~ This week's observation - another uppy week for bank, Russia/Ukraine/Israel/Hamas hostilities rattle on - cost of living continues to bite, strikes strikes strikes, Israel/Hamas ceasefire ended, Farage still in the Jungle! Rwanda plan back on track?
A very basic comparison that does not include divi yield, IMO those still suggesting lloy is 'the worst share ever' or a 'dire share' should maybe consider premium bonds?

As I'm sure the Board wouldn't want to be seen as dedicating more shareholders profits to Buybacks than they pay to long-suffering yet loyal shareholders !!!
~~~ The case for Special divi's --- and could Lloy afford it???
Thanks to the buyback program, Share in circulation has dropped to 63.6bn
2023 final 1.84 + interim 0.92 = total 2.76p x 63.6bn = £1.75bn
So. . . Projected total cost of standard Divi 2023 = £1.75bn
Projected cost of a 0.5p Special = 0.318bn
Cost of projected 2.76p normal divi + 0.5p Special = £2.068bn
2024 Projected Buyback £2bn?
£2.068bn divis + £2bn buybacks = ~£4.068bn
Lloy Projected 2023 Post Tax Profit circa £6bn?
So, seems Lloy could easily afford 0.5p Special divi - and it would present a better balance re Divi's v Buybacks
Lloy 2023 full year results - 22nd Feb 24
PT - IMO better to grow and buyback our way out of the basement - Lloy is earning substantial amounts of profits, and those profits are being returned to shareholders via divi's and buyback, Lloy is currently totally undervalued on the stock market, IMO, consolidation does nothing for the underlying value, it's just window dressing,
Buyback&cancel is the best solution, and at current SP is a total bargain, it just takes a while
Could we see £2.5bn or even £3bn buyback&cancel next year?
The case for Special divi's - could Lloy afford it??? Because I'm sure the Board wouldn't want to be seen as dedicating more shareholders profits to the Buyback program than they pay to long-suffering yet loyal shareholders !!!
Seems Lloy could easily afford 0.5p (even a 1p) Special divi
Stagecoach -
I suspect you will be right - post covid annual divi has been climbing ~15% per year (any rise happens with the interim) - and Lloy has been spending an equal amount (if not more) on the buyback policy (saving Lloy £bn's) - in fact, due to less and less shares in circulation the total cost of the annual divi is starting to struggle to keep up with amount allotted to the buyback program - hence the case for 'specials'
Post covid Interim divi increase history
2021 - 0.67
2022 - 0.8 +19.4%
2023 - 0.92p +15%
2024 - 1.06p? +15%
Yes MPO818,
The Banking sector seems to be enduring a very slow recovery from the impact of Covid, but recover I'm sure the sector will do in due course,
Meanwhile, Good see Lloy is taking full advantage of the bargain low SP on behalf of us LTH's
