Southerhay - Yes that has been my thinking ever since I came across ITM 12 years ago...cost was the main reason it didn't happen, along with very little regulatory support as government has been continuously lobbied by fossil and grid suppliers that centralised power is necessary. Yes, it is still necessary of course, but for me distributed generation and storage is the way forward and especially community based generation, distribution and storage in addition to local, in situ, generation and storage. That is more efficient and resilient too in terms of energy security; it should ultimately cost less as well after the initial investment. However investing money into our old housing stock ensuring it reduces the demand in the first place and overhauling the new build regulations makes the most sense, economically and operationally. Unfortunately there has historically been very little support for passive or retrofit passive homes and the building sector has not been regulated in a way that encourages those homes.
