Fidra Energy is currently leading the development of large-scale electricity storage projects in the UK, specifically through its Thorpe Marsh facility. This 1,400 MW / 3,100 MWh project is the largest standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in the UK and among the largest in Europe, having secured financial close with backing from EIG and the National Wealth Fund. It is expected to be operational starting in mid-2027.
Other major players dominating the UK’s large-scale storage landscape include:
Zenobē Energy: A key developer with 300 MW / 600 MWh operational capacity in Kilmarnock and the Blackhillock site, aiming to deliver 1.2 GW by 2027.
Statera Energy: A leader in flexible generation and utility-scale BESS, recently achieving milestones with the 680 MW Carrington Storage project and the 300 MW Thurrock facility.
RWE: Taking final investment decision on its largest UK storage project, the Pembroke Battery Storage, a circa £200 million development expected to commission in 2028.
NatPower UK: Partnering with Sembcorp to develop the Teesside GigaPark, a massive 1,000 MW / 8,000 MWh project targeted for completion in October 2028.
Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP): Developing significant infrastructure, including 500 MW / 3 GWh systems in Scotland and the Coalburn project, which will power approximately three million homes.
