The alternative to Vanadium in steel strengthening applications on the surface of it is Niobium. However Niobium strengthening works in a completely different way to Vanadium strengthening - see the same article as recommended to DavidDFO earlier - and this requires a reheat furnace with much higher temperature and greater deformation on the subsequent rolling processes (50% reduction in cross sectional area on each pass) which means that many steel plants would take years to change from Vanadium to Niobium, even if they wanted to.
Furthermore there is only a single main Niobium supplier in the world (CBMM in Brazil) so deciding to change from Vanadium with its diversified supply, to Niobium, is a very risky thing.
Do not assume that Vanadium prices will fall below 70 USD/KgV in the next 3 years,
