faramog - well in principle it won't cost any more to convert it back into electricity - so the idea is that Hydrogen is a temporary store of energy. In fact it is what we would need for what is called 'seasonal' energy storage - allowing us to store energy harvested from sunlight in the summer to be used in the winter when we need it. It's the next stage up from batteries, past hydroelectric, in terms of potential energy size and timescale.

The problem with hydrogen of course is the transportation and new distribution infrastructure, in principle the existing natural gas supply can have some hydrogen added into it and we continue using as normal, up to a point. Largescale hydrogen vehicle uptake though is the thing that will really kick off the hydrogen economy so they may actually be hurting that by pandering to the Lithium-ion lot like this.

Peterfal and CG - let me get this right - they are using a fuel cell to convert hydrogen into electricity to charge electric vehicles that run off (lithium-ion) batteries ?

So instead of using the hydrogen, which is the fuel that has the very highest specific energy density, as the fuel that one drives around with they are making the light stuff stationary ? That really doesn't make a lot of sense from a physics perspective.

Also the sentence in the RNS "Traditional charging causes pollution with electricity from fossil fuels, but AFC Energy's CH2ARGE system can be 100% emissions free." is truly truly disingenuous - the hydrogen has to come from somewhere so unless they have suddenly discovered a source of free hydrogen then it will need to come from the electrolysis of water by, guess what, electricity.

vauch - whilst there is something clever about the Vanadium oxide coating on the glass it is not controllable in that you can turn it on or off. It is controllable in the sense that you may be able to tune the transition temperature point, eg via doping or, as in a blue LED, via internal crystal strain, but once the stuff is down it simply does whatever it does without having to have any control, power supply, etc.

Exciting isn't it actually finding a company that is dong things and going places rather than just doing the same old hackneyed job of claiming they are about to find the next oil well/cure for cancer/erecticle dysfunction/ innovative cryptononsense advertising model.
