Uksteveg - the idea that speculators 'moved in' is a nonsense. Vanadium is not listed on the london metals exchange, you can't actually go anywhere and buy a load of Vanadium even if you wanted to. It is simply not possible as any kind of outside speculator to buy into an obvious upcoming price rise of the commodity. The only 'speculators' that exist are those that are in the Vanadium trade and this means people working for you know who.

California gets it - they have mandated a minimum of 4 hour duration storage for their batteries. They have abundant solar resources and can retire some of their gas peaker fleet on the back of this project. What goes for California also goes for Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas (plus wind), Louisiana and Florida. NREL estimates that up to 28 GW of gas peaker plants could be displaced by 4 hour batteries at CURRENT levels of PV penetration. Increase the PV and this value rises significantly due to the 'duck curve' effect.

There is either a structural deficit in a commodity or there is not. In the case of Vanadium there is because there is going to be more Vanadium needing to be produced in the future to deal with increased demand, primarily from Chinese rebar, but there's Indian rebar as well, we don't need to add in demand from VRFBs.

Speculative price spikes benefit the trading organisations that have up to this point had the V-market under their control but the impact of this is to drive some steel production off Vanadium and onto Niobium for a bit, until supply-demand economics returns and the whole cycle kicks off again (or doesn't because the Vanadium supply market is becoming increasingly democratised.)

More than two years on, with Vanchem clearly back in some sort of operation prior to a business sale, I would be surprised if anyone with a legitimate claim to being owed money would not yet have surfaced and been paid off simply so as to avoid anything unnerving being uncovered during due diligence on any sale. As we know Fortune is nothing if not diligent and would have been fully aware of the situation at Vanchem, probably for at least 3 years, if not a lot longer.
