I think that the confusion may have been to the word 'precipitation' - which is chemical terms is the settling out of solids from a solution, whilst meteorological, is rain.

I had understood that the contamination during electrolyte filling was not necessarily of a chemical nature but was due to the fact that electrolyte was allowed to precipitate inside the power stacks during filling, as a result of the previously mentioned fire alarm evacuation of the (entire) Rosherville Campus.

Well spotted Gr33ning68 and I agree with dubmaskullanga. This is just the CFC problem all over again - a relatively cheap to produce product that is useful but who's damaging polluting impact is not fully factored into the price. This is where market economics fails and government legislation is required. As gases don't stay in the country they are produced and instead travel around the globe this is where global legislative agreement is required and where the approach of the isolationists such as Trump fails.

We should congratulate the BBC on bringing this to everyone's attention and should get on with staged banning and the introduction of alternatives.

jogj99 - you think the 1000 GWh per year capacity (i.e. 5,000 tonnes of V) at East London will be quickly used up so that a second electrolyte production facility would need to be constructed at Vanchem - gosh that is quite a prospect.

My understanding is that purity is a key requirement for electrolyte production and perhaps having that located in a different place means that it is possible to establish higher levels of process control than might have been traditional at plants such as Vanchem.

No it simply states that it provides further capacity through vanadium oxide production it does not state that the final electrolyte production would actually be there.

That is why we are building our own electrolyte manufacturing plant at east london. It is why we are going through all the environmental Impact Assessments there (passed last week I believe).

Anyone who has been paying careful attention will have noted that the the initial Electrolyte Plant scoping report dated June 2018 listed Purified V2O5 as a the production feedstock for the EL electrolyte plant. However the more recent documents have referred to Modified Vanadium Oxide (MVO) or Vanadium oxides - I recall someone saying something at some point about V2O3 being easier to process into electrolyte than V2O5 ......

Lindon - what makes you think Vanchem will be producing electrolyte ?

now that we are in an upward part of the cycle the obvious trolls that turned up yesterday are not going to be trying bash the company to try and get a lower buy back price.
