Add to this the fact that BNM are going to have their work cut out just supplying enough electrolyte for the Dalian 800 MWh VRFB being build by Rongke and you can sleep soundly in the confident belief that we surely cement our relationship with UET at some point in the not too distant future. Perhaps buy into just a couple more VRFB manufacturers before that.

Magellaniccloud - not so much the Oyama fire, but the subsequent fire of the 2MW Sodium-Sulphur battery in Ibaraki prefecture I know a little more about - that fire lasted 15 days.

In that situation almost 24,000 Kg of Sulphur and 12,000 Kg of Sodium caught fire, destroying the entire building, and lets be honest, the chances for a Sodium-Sulphur battery industry. Ten years later NGK (the original manufacturers) are still the only manufacturer of Sodium-Sulphur batteries that I am aware of.

Loudspeaker - indeed 23 major Battery Energy Storage System fires in one country (South Korea) in one year (2018) is somewhat remarkable.

You won't have read much about this in the western press of course, because their government hushed it all up pretty effectively.

magellaniccloud - I've been looking of any video from the big Sodium-Sufur fires that stopped NGK in their tracks a few years ago. The first of these was a 200kW Sodium Sulphur battery at Oyama in Japan - it took 2 days to extinguish.

There's two ways that energy storage can be provided to grids that are providing markets for energy balancing services.

1) Energy Storage Service Project operators can approach build their own models of the expected demand for balancing services at a particular location and can then approach battery manufacturers to ask them how well the battery will perform in those particular scenarios, whilst modelling the expected revenue that they expect to be able to achieve by selling energy balancing services back to the grid. They then approach some sort of lending institution and try and make their case.

2) or battery manufacturers can take the project lead role in 1) which has the advantage of the fact that they do not need to have to believe another party's performance promises, for they know the performance of their devices themselves.

Bella I caught up with Alexander Schoenfeldt at one of the Energy Storage meetings recently and casually dropped into the discussion a comment about the Vametco minigrid project. Following on from that comment we had some discussion about it that makes it clear that Cellcube were not the only company invited to quote on this project.

Thus the fact that the Cellcube batteries are shown in that golder planning document is not hugely definitive - it could be that Cellcube get the gig, or maybe someone else.

Certainly is global - I see that we have readers in Auckland, NZ right now. What time is it there now, for heavens sake ?

It will take about a decade to ramp up to this level but by 2030 they are predicting a global rollout rate of around 40 GW per year by 2030. Assuming that these batteries are average duration 4 hours, that is 160GWh per year.

Assuming that VRFBs capture only 20% of this market that is 32 GWh per year. Since Each GWh requires 5,000 tonnes of Vanadium that is a demand of 160,000 tonnes of Vanadium per year - i.e. double what the world currently produces.

The question is can the Vanadium industry meet this demand - I think it is possible, and we are going to be a major part of that.

we need to be careful about what we are talking about as 1 tonne of electrolyte contains perhaps only 1/8th of a Tonne of Vanadium. Fortunately the presence of the letter 'v' in 'mtv' indicates that we are talking about tonnes of vanadium equivalent.
