'White oil': Americans eyeing Portuguese lithium

The US administration wants companies in their country to invest in the production of lithium in Portugal, if it turns out that there are large-scale reserves of this mineral. The Portuguese Government is preparing to launch, in the third quarter of 2021, a tender to allocate prospecting and research rights to ascertain, in 11 areas of the country, whether and where lithium is present, its quantity and the economic viability of the its extraction. The importance of the mineral also known as "white oil" or "white gold" has grown in recent years, as it is a vital component for the energy transition, in particular for the lithium-ion batteries that power electric cars. The United States Department of State's Assistant Under Secretary for Energy Resources, Francis Fannon, was recently in Portugal to meet with the Government and the private sector to present an alliance made up of several countries, which aims to guarantee the world a secure supply chain for lithium and other essential minerals for the energy transition.

I have mixed feeling over finance.... You see AIM likes a sell on news event, but generally because there are so many hurdles still left to get over the next risk item is presented in the journey. This however really is the last big risk of note and opens up the true value of what is in the ground. It enters a new price phase and opens up a new range of sophiscated buyers.... One thing for certain it will be higher after news than before. HOw far it goes and what it does in terms of retrace is uncertain, I can't see it retrace to pre finance price because that would have had to have been priced in already and for me finance is definitely not priced in. However, the biggest driver of pricing finance in must be the first piece in the puzzle the $325m after that everything else follows in an orderly fashion I should imagine.

DFS will change the CAPEX. Expect it a little higher for 2 reasons. 1. Incorporating the by-products is $15m but the by-product income will be fantastic to offset that. 2. It will be a 2mpta project probably not a 1.3mptpa, so bigger infrastructure. Both will increase NPV however. C1 costs with new bu-products and no shippping to China could make for some very low costs years 1-4. Could be less than $150/t. Not many will better that! And important in early years if SPod prices doesn't break out considerably in near term and while still making a profit at lower prices debt still gets paid!

Any graphite investments could suffer quickly if silicone really puts the heat on that anode sector. Prediction s are still for a lot of graphite but until there is a commercial silicone anode those predictions remain.
