Hi Monkshood, I had similar thoughts to you when Dr Martin Bell describes Avacta as being like the next Abcam in his view. Having never heard of Abcam, I obviously looked them up and wondered why they weren’t also in the running to produce a Covid test, given their areas of expertise.

Plot thickens. No equivalent RNS from Abcam, yet they are up 10% on overnight US trading on no news.

Absolutely! And, as he points out in the interview, there is a job to be done to overcome the poor communication surrounding lateral flow testing to date.

Reading between the lines, he has struggled to convince the powers that be that LFTs are superior to PCR when it comes to detecting the infectious.

Don’t forget that ODX was mentioned in both the Daily Mail and the FT as being confirmed by gov to be involved with Moonshot antigen test manufacturing. There was no mention of Avacta. Still under the radar......

Listening to this podcast about the development of the Lighthouse Labs, it seems that the emphasis has all been on delivering real time PCR testing, I wonder if there has been any kind of bias on the part of Prof Molloy towards sticking with PCR as the gold standard test (as opposed to any new technologies such as BAMS)? Given that Mologic seem to have the ear of Bill Gates and the WHO (latterly less keen on PCR) let’s hope this is an alternative route to changing the gold standard to one that it more properly reflects infectiousness.

The kind of large-scale community testing that these tests facilitate is part of the government’s COVID-19 winter plan to identify those who may be infectious with coronavirus earlier in order to break the chains of transmission and keep the virus under control. Alongside the rollout of vaccines, rapid regular testing will be key in time to getting people back to doing the things they love.
