The government has insisted that the rollout is not being stopped and that there are no plans to remove the existing machines, some of which have been validated and are now providing rapid testing for hospital patients and staff.

I posted this link on 26th Nov - my interpretation was it wasn't a problem with the equipment but over personnel to use the equipment in lab conditions in the smaller hospitals. Is that not why there is such a focus on the LAMP process as this can be used at smaller site - sorry if I am barking up the wrong tree - I'm np expert, just going on what I have been reading!

Development of a LAMP COVID-19 test

Loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) technology is a single-tube technique for the amplification of DNA and RNA and is considered a low-cost alternative to detect certain diseases, including COVID-19. Isothermal amplification is carried out at a constant temperature without the need for a thermal cycler, contrasting to PCR amplification, which is carried out with a series of alternating temperature steps or cycles in a thermal cycler.

Incredible collaborations have been developed since spring, with DHSC, Glaxo Smith Klein, AstraZeneca and Cambridge University all partnering with Novacyt to plan the UK’s testing future. Novacyt’s in-house diagnostic champions PrimerDesign collaborated with Optigene in discovering a way of increasing accuracy in LAMP and PCR saliva sample testing. They shared knowledge and worked together on trials to find non-invasive techniques which would increase regular testing adoption. Both Optigene and PrimerDesign mastered saliva sampling and both have been running saliva trials in the UK – Optigene further north in Salford and Novacyt in London.

Optigene are the perfect partner for Novacyt and we commend their earnest use of technology to truly benefit the testing network. Together Novacyt and Optigene will handle a testing volume this winter which was not previously possible. LGC, another Insider favourite, have now began with their supply of 6 of their ePCR machines and can handle an incredible throughput in lab settings. Although these are limited in that results cannot be analysed in real time as with Novacyt’s qPCR (real time PCR), they have excellent throughput and very good accuracy.

Here we have the core of Moonshot’s ambitious testing plan, and once the ability of Optigene and LGC are fully realised, it is hoped Novacyt can turn more of their manufacturing capacity, which the CEO has said is flexible, to producing WinterPlex, which can distinguish between flu from covid-19 and RSV which all have similar symptoms. Running this panel on Q32 machines will be Novacyt’s focus as the pandemic unfolds.

I'm no expert but with someone as smart as GM would he not include some sort of protection clause in any contracts when negotiating with a distributor/manufacturing partner to protect our interests?

Part 2
One of the issues in manufacturing such a large quantity of kits to meet demand is the global shortfall in extraction agents, but to combat this, the company have been developing a new 'direct to PCR' method which is set to remove this need for the reagents and this new technology is expected to be launched this month. It will increase cycle times, provide higher through-puts and allow cost savings.

The big question is whether Novacyt will manage to stay independent. With such demand, their revenue streams are way beyond that of a small AIM listed company. Their product is in such demand, manufacturing to meet demand is a major, but fantastic problem to have. Working alongside Astrazeneca, Thermo Fisher and GlaxoSmithKline it seems logical and likely one of them will take the company out.

Which one and for how much?

May is set to be a month of news for Novacyt, licence agreements, new global customers, manufacturing updates, product advancement, end of year accounts and whatever else may come to bear.

For the first time since Novacyt announced their 100% accurate test, the government (Matt Han****) officially announced yesterday that the company were part of the huge effort to meet their target of testing 100,000 people per day by the end of April. This target has since been upped to the next stage of 200,000.

The company is one of only a few who's test kit is approved/recommended by the World Health Organisation and they already have a foothold in over 100 countries globally, with orders flowing in daily. The recent RNS confirmed theyhave sold, received orders for or have been contracted to deliver over £90 million of test kits. An incredible figure that is guaranteed to rise substantially as this pandemic continues to exist.

The company also announced plans to increase manufacturing capacity to approximately eight million tests per month. Confirmation of deals with 6 sub contract manufacturers and the ability to exceed their plans to scale up to 8,000,000 kits per month suggests orders are going to far outweigh their capabilities and I am sure we are going to see additional deals along with a number of 'named' Pharmaceuticals.

The Company is on track with this scale-up and expects to achieve at least this level of output during June 2020. In addition, Novacyt has signed manufacturing partnership agreements with two further contract manufacturers based in the UK. This provides Novacyt with a total of six sub-contract manufacturers in addition to its own manufacturing sites in Southampton and Camberley, which provides greater contingency and the flexibility to scale-up its manufacturing outputs beyond eight million tests per month when necessary. I am expecting to hear more agreements on licencing the test kits to be produced by other companies under their own brand name.
There are a lot of rumours now flying about that Thermo Fisher will be selling the Primerdesign brand. The fact they announced they could supply the shortfall in the government requirements would seem to confirm they will be manufacturing and supplying the same kits.
