RE: Russia and the Ukraine13 Feb 2022 19:28
It looks like a small local conflict, but all 3 sides (Russia, Ukraine and NATO) appear to be very keen to make this explode into something bigger. Should just blow over hopefully - but hey, everyone forgot about COVID.
From what I can gather, Ukrainian nationalists are not happy with the Minsk agreement signed by their previous president, devolving some of the central powers to Donetsk. "Not happy" as in pretending that the agreement has never happened. Google Minsk Protocol to get more info on it. Donetsk want to separate from Ukraine and, presumably, join Russia like Crimea did a few years ago, but for some reason (completely unknown to me) the current Ukrainian government does not want that to happen. It's a poor area with afaik no natural resources apart from old depleted coal mines, so it's not like it would be a huge loss, but wtfdik.
As far as I can see, there's no intention for Russia to contest any territories apart from protecting the interests of the pro-Russian Donetsk.
Ukraine is now talking about fighting Russia for Donetsk [even though Donetsk people themselves don't appear to want that. I mean, they've been fighting a war with the Ukrainian government that wants to "protect" them for years now] and "taking Crimea back". The latter, imho, is a joke and a provocation, as I've been there a few years before the war, and it was a hugely pro-Russian territory that at the time has been run into the ground by the Ukrainian government. They've held a referendum to join Russia and it passed with something like a 9-1 vote if memory serves me right, with the 10% being made by the pro-Kiev youngest generations.
So the conflict appears to be purely local, however, Putin is now showing off and starting to make loud claims about what Nato should and should not do, while some of the NATO countries (including the current twats in Westminster unfortunately) are showing off and telling Putin what he can and cannot do on Russian territory. Ukrainian nationalists are just happy to stir up trouble, as long as they have Uncle Sam on their side, so they can show them ruskies (who they loathe) who's the real boss.
Why the f.ck is UK voluntarily getting dragged into this **** is beyond me.
