Last thing I've heard is that DA is half-bear. He's been hibernating for a few months, but should get active closer to spring. Don't know if it's true, but sounds plausible.

During hibernation, DA's metabolism slows down, his body temperature decreases slightly, and his heart rate slows from a normal value of 55 to just 9 beats per minute. DA normally does not wake during hibernation, and can go the entire period without eating, drinking, urinating, or defecating. A fecal plug is formed in the colon, and is expelled when DA wakes in the spring. If he has stored enough body fat, his muscles remain in good condition, and his protein maintenance requirements are met from recycling waste urea.
