Imagine the amount of stuff that has been forced into the formation, at high pressure and as quickly as possible, it is being recovered along with formation liquids at a controlled rate through a choke about half an inch in diameter. There will be a cross over at some point between what is down there and what was pumped down there. It takes time, sure I am as nervous as the next guy but I think this will come good, if it was a complete dud we would know by now.

Years ago I could do this on a calculator as it was an exam question in something I was doing. I found an online calculator, guessed the height of the camera at 8 meters and the top of the flare stack at 20 meters and the line of sight answer is just over 26 clicks, (26060 meters).

Yes, gas flared off , other hydrocarbons including oil separated and eventually put into the pipeline and sold for a few quid. Frac and formation water tankered off for disposal, probably at Prudoe.

To put a little context to the frac job, they pumped in something like 9 million gallons of water (from memory). At a pumping rate at anywhere between 50000 and 150000 barrels a day into the well. Flow back will be through a hard steel choke, looks like a very thick washer about 3 inches in diameter, concave on one side and a small hole maybe an inch in diameter (measurement’s in 64ths inch) in the centre. Flow back at maybe 2000 bbls a day, do the maths to get an idea of the time it will take to clean up. There are 55 US gallons to an US barrel.

I don’t think people have really cottoned on, at the moment they are cooking with gas. Exceeded the lateral drill target, set and cemented all of it, shipped in from Canada and fracked 25 stages in 8 days, I am not worried about how long just that they keep on doing what they are doing. There is some serious ‘good job’ going on here!

To add to what Marmaris has said, stop pumping, decrease is pump pressure on head, gas gets in the wellbore bottom of the hole, pumps back on, gas circulated back up the annulus, expands via Boyles Law with bubble point, suddenly a lot of cubic meters, further decreases head and watch out. Close it in and circulate out. One of my jobs as a derrick man was go and look at the mud return outflow when new joint added.

It is even simpler than that. Each tested zone needs to be plugged off, so plugging at the top first is not going to work, you are putting a barrier in the way. Also pressure gradient decreases as you come up the well bore, so any flow between zones will be from the bottom up, not a good thing, again hence sealing off from bottom up.

On water, given the North Slopes propensity for producing more oil than you can shake a stick at, I think the chances of finding commercial oil further up the well bore are good. Plus, if the 'tighter' rock was flowing at 1000 bod it's reasonable to expect the same or better over the next 5 zones. I remain quietly optimistic and like what i have heard from Max.

The pad Geodes is referring to is the piece of ground the drilling rig sits on, directly below the drill floor (I think), on a floater that would be the sub-sea deck. I think his point is that the flare would be away from the rig and personnel. They would run chic-sans or equivalent pipe to a corner of the (confusingly) gravel pad. So there are two 'pads', gravel pad and drilling pad....at least that is my understanding.
