On it's own does it matter? If they cost tuppence and take 2 mins to replace and don't need it switching off then a poor longevity is not much of a problem, if they cost shed loads and need a day of downtime then that's a different story, so longevity on it's own is not that useful. The PLACE metrics kind of accounted for that. If they say 2 years and 300 days, what do we do with that information, nod sagely? if they say 2 years and 299 days do we panic sell?

Sorry to sound harsh but there's a much wider picture, better might be the total cost of ownership per 100KW over 5 years, compared to some other system, like diesel generators, or some non-alkaline fuel cell, taking into account servicing, parts, fuel etc.

Coco Google Oxford super hub, announced on sky news today they've just picked up 20m of government funding (I assume there is a government at this time). It's a local grid that they are developing, and hence need storage. Risky, not sure who you were replying to, but where was the plan at the point of the vote? Other than the one to cause chaos which those with they own private investment companies could then arrange to profit from? Where was the plan to do the things that they promised they would do if we left, or were they just aspirational goals?

Why should the other party (the EU) lift a finger to help in a negotiation, they hold the cards, they can name their price, it was never going to be 'easy' as some would have us believe. It is of no benefit to them if we leave, there is no win-win, that's the only point at which there is a reason for both parties to actively seek a solution.

However the points about this should have been full cross party are spot on, whoever won the prize of implementing brexit was going to lose until the public forgot about the inevitable pain, so it should have been party agnostic.

Bobf, it'll double the volume of the storage tanks, that could be no increase in foot print if you doubled the height of the tank, but yes more storage more size. The question that's been asked is how does this size compare to l-ion for the same MW'age. My argument is that its irrelevant, imagine that site in Australia for teslas battery, acres of land, very few locations will be so space constrained that it's the deciding factor.

Jamesss there's a lot of talk comparing size of various solutions, in an industrial setting is it really an issue providing its not immense? Unlike some technologies I don't see a need for airflow around the storage tanks, perhaps around the generation and charging end of the kit, so it could be easy to bury most of it.

Does physical size matter that much in a static system? The tanks could be below ground, they could literally be cavernous.

Chippyjo, agree, everyone can win here, some get to maintain their business, some get significant growth, and the grid doesn't have to grow. In fact the national grid could be a partner too, from a distributed grid point of view.

I still say that the most logical grouping is with a fuel manufacturer, they do 'chemical stuff' and provide a liquid fuel, in this case h2, afc turn it into e. The fuel manufacturer gets to remain involved in fuel as oil based fuels die down and they get a gradual transition to the new economy. But I'll be shouted down by someone here, until they come to the same conclusion and post links to it.

Chippy, which is absolutely were AFC come in, and whose badge in on the forecourt is a bit of a red herring, the people that make the money day to day are the ones that can get the most drivers satisfied in terms of charging at the same time. Story recently about an attempt to to oxford to edinburgh and back in an electric car, many stations were occupied/non functional, more are needed, but without the grid input they can't have them. The car manufacturers don't lose out at that point, they've sold the car, and by the time they need to sell you another one it'll be sorted, but in the meantime those forecourts will have people passing by as there is no slot to park in, and the charge and price of coffee and cake is lost.
