FTSE 100 movers: Takeover speculation drives utilities higher

Mon, 27th Jan 2014 15:55

United Utilities and Severn Trent both climbed on takeover speculation, with the FT's Alphaville blog referencing rumours of a possible private equity bid out of Canada for either one. BSkyB was performing strongly ahead of Thursday's second quarter update, with investors stocking up amid M&A chatter. Good growth is expected to be shown by the report, with a good deal of investor interest set to be on what difference the loss of the Champions League football deal is set to mean for the group. BAE Systems also climbed on reports it could be awarded a contract with Bahrain for a number of fighter jets. A "top official" reportedly told the Gulf Daily News that, "his Majesty King Hamad has made certain statements in the last year saying that he is very interested in the Typhoon and we are hoping, as are the British government, that he will place an order with us". The were also reports that it had won a $37m contract to repair, maintain and upgrade services on the US Navy's USS Chung Hoon vessel. Meanwhile, BG Group shares were pushed lower after the natural gas producer warned both production and profits would likely be lower this year due to "short-term issues" in Egypt and the US.Another big faller was Hargreaves Lansdown, which some traders were linking to the release of Barclays Stockbrokers' new platform pricing. Vodafone shares retreated, hit by the news that AT&T does not plan to make a bid, as had been widely rumoured.FTSE 100 - RisersSevern Trent (SVT) 1,705.00p +1.61%British Sky Broadcasting Group (BSY) 865.50p +1.58%United Utilities Group (UU.) 711.50p +1.57%Weir Group (WEIR) 2,122.00p +1.53%Rolls-Royce Holdings (RR.) 1,185.00p +1.11%BAE Systems (BA.) 434.00p +0.93%Smith & Nephew (SN.) 889.50p +0.74%SABMiller (SAB) 2,905.50p +0.57%Carnival (CCL) 2,499.00p +0.52%William Hill (WMH) 338.50p +0.47%FTSE 100 - FallersBG Group (BG.) 1,078.50p -14.06%Hargreaves Lansdown (HL.) 1,439.00p -4.64%Vodafone Group (VOD) 224.70p -3.38%Coca-Cola HBC AG (CDI) (CCH) 1,644.00p -3.07%easyJet (EZJ) 1,584.00p -2.52%Aviva (AV.) 446.20p -2.28%Mondi (MNDI) 916.50p -2.08%Pearson (PSON) 1,147.00p -2.05%Smiths Group (SMIN) 1,440.00p -2.04%Fresnillo (FRES) 776.00p -2.02%NR
