Torotrak Signs Development Agreement For KERS Technology Use In Trucks

Thu, 02nd Jun 2016 07:16

LONDON (Alliance News) - Torotrak PLC on Thursday said it has signed an agreement with an unnamed global manufacturer to develop the high-power KERS technology for use in a large mining truck and an on-highway articulated truck.

Torotrak, which makes emissions reduction and fuel efficiency technology for vehicles, said the agreement is with a manufacturer of off-highway construction and mining equipment within a Heavy Duty Vehicles Efficiency programme established by the energy research, development and demonstration body Energy Technologies Institute.

The fully funded programme will be looking to design, develop and demonstrate a high-power KERS for integration in the main drivetrain of both a large mining truck and an on-highway articulated truck.

KERS technology is a Kinetic Energy Recovery System and recovers the kinetic energy that comes from the waste heat given off by the car when barking. This can be stored and covered into power.

Work is already underway on the project, Torotrak said.

"We are very pleased to have been selected as a partner in this important project, confirming the market-leading benefits that our KERS technology can deliver in a wide range of on and off-highway vehicles. Our low-cost, robust, high-power KERS can improve efficiency, reduce emissions and deliver attractive operator payback," said Chief Executive Adam Robson.
