Deliveroo, GMB in pact for good relations between riders, restaurants

Thu, 04th Apr 2024 09:27

(Alliance News) - A charter has been signed between a leading trade union and delivery company Deliveroo PLC aimed at fostering positive relationships between riders and restaurants.

A total of 30 national restaurant chains and supermarkets, including Wagamama, Wingstop, Bella Italia, Morrisons, the Co-op, Farmer J, Thunderbird and Whole Foods, have signed up.

The respect charter, which includes principles on treating everyone with dignity, communicating openly, access to facilities and working together to achieve operational excellence, has been signed by the GMB, Deliveroo and rider representatives.

GMB official Tom Warnett said: "Everyone has the right to go about their work safely and be treated with respect.

"Time is money for couriers and a commitment to reducing waiting time is really important.

"GMB union is involved in the gig economy to bring the standards up.

"We will do this by making sure couriers are paid fairly, treated with respect and maintain the flexibility that they came into the industry for."

Camilla Kater, of Deliveroo, said: "This charter is the first of its kind across our industry and demonstrates the positive impact working hand in hand with the GMB has had.

"Our partnership with the GMB is already delivering for our riders and, through jointly creating the respect charter, we have solidified our commitment to create a positive and supportive environment for riders and merchants."

Jonathan Recanati, chief executive and founder of Farmer J, said: "We are proud to stand alongside industry leaders in committing to the Deliveroo Courier Charter, fostering a culture of dignity, communication, and collaboration within our community of riders and restaurants."

Sunday newspaper round-up: China, Russia, Property prices

(Sharecast News) - Chinese policymakers are targeting the slowest rate of growth for their economy this year since 1991 in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. At the opening of the National People's Congress, Premier Li Keqiang said the government's target for GDP growth in 2022 had been set at 5.5% and promised to increase fiscal spending, including on defence. For their part, private economists anticipate that the People's Bank of China will cut interest rates, even as western countries do the opposite in order to brake price growth. Nevertheless, Beijing's target is higher than the International Monetary Fund's own for growth of 4.8%. - The Sunday Times
