Wed, 23rd Oct 2013 14:06

Chip designer ARM Holdings fell for the second straight day as investors gave a cool reaction to its third-quarter results. JPMorgan Cazenove said this morning that it sees "no reason to be building positions at this time and would take profits in the short term". A number of stocks were also trading in the red after going ex-dividend, including Smiths Group, BAE System, Rolls-Royce, John Menzies, Senior, William Hill, Rank Group, Barratt Developments and JD Wetherspoon.Banks all over Europe were out of favour after the European Central Bank said it would start to review the balance sheets of 130 institutions across the continent. RBS, Barclays, Lloyds, and HSBC were all registering losses in London.HSBC was also likely affected by the news its subsidiary HSBC Bank Middle East (HBME) has terminated the sale agreement of its banking business in Pakistan to JS Bank because regulatory approval was not received.GlaxoSmithKline beat earnings growth expectations in the third quarter but the share price fell after revenues came in 2% below expectations. With turnover up 1% to £6.51bn during the three months to September 30th, the drug developer lifted core operating profits 11% to £2.06bn at constant exchange rates (CER) and earnings per share 16% to 28.9p at CER.Meanwhile, renewed takeover speculation pushed RSA Insurance shares higher. Reuters referenced trader talk that Swiss-listed Zurich Financial, Italy-based Generali and UK peer Aviva are all being touted as potential bidders for the company - in a transaction whose value may rise to £7bn. Housebuilders Persimmon and Travis Perkins were given a lift by the British Bankers' Association which reported that the number of mortgages approved last month surged by almost 40% above last year's September figure to 42,990.
