FTSE 100 Movers: Banks and miners head north

Fri, 09th Dec 2011 14:44

The banks - Lloyds, RBS and Barclays - took the top spots, rising around 3% each, as markets digest last night's developments from the EU summit.Mining peers Fresnillo, ENRC, Kazakhmys, Xstrata and Antofagasta were also making gains. EU leaders have failed in a bid to make changes to the treaties which govern the European Union, a move which was seen as the best hope of rescuing the Eurozone from its current difficulties. Meanwhile, there are rumours that Lloyds boss Antonio Horta-Osorio may have reapply for his own job after going on stress-induced medical leave last month. Reports say the board of the bank will meet next Thursday to discuss his return and the establish whether or not he can change his micro-management style, which has been blamed for his health problems.Although no longer on the top ten, oil and gas giant BG Group was rising on market chatter which speculated that it may be putting a stake in its Brazilian business up for sale. The sale could be worth up to $20bn.IMI was the biggest faller as Credit Suisse cut its rating to "underperform" after the brokers highlighted the stock, which trades heavily in Europe, as being as risk from the ongoing economic turmoil. British gas owner Centrica also fell on news it is to spend $58m (£37m) buying gas assets in Canada as it continues to grow its North American business.
