Oct 22 (Reuters) - Cable & Wireless Communications Plc said it was in talks that could result in a takeoveroffer from Liberty Global Plc, the cable companybacked by billionaire John Malone.

A deal would give Liberty a foothold in the Caribbean andLatin America, where Cable & Wireless already has a strongpresence.

Cable & Wireless, which is also backed by Malone, saiddiscussions with Liberty about a possible cash-and-stock bidwere not certain to result in a firm offer.

In September, Liberty Global abandoned talks with VodafonePlc about a swap of business assets in Europe'sconverging mobile phone, broadband and TV markets, having failedto agree on valuations.

Liberty Global did not immediately respond to a request forcomment.
