London close: German party poopers bash shares

Mon, 17th Oct 2011 16:44

It was an another topsy-turvy dominated by changing perceptions of the Eurozone situation, with shares finishing firmly in the red after Steffen Seibert, spokesman for German Chancellor Angela Merkel, suggested that markets were getting carried away with the optimism. Referring to the hopes being pinned on the programme of measures being formulated to sort out the Eurozone crisis, Seibert said, "Dreams that are taking hold again now that, with this package, everything will be solved, and everything will be over on Monday, won't be able to be fulfilled." Nonetheless, Seibert did confirm that topics such as how to carry out a coordinated bank recapitalisation plan or how to increase the effectiveness of the European Financial Stability Fund (EFSF) are on the agenda of the summit meeting of European leaders scheduled for October 23rd in Brussels. BP boost, G4S gutted BP rose over 5% in the opening minutes after it reached agreement with Anadarko Petroleum to settle all claims between the companies related to the Deepwater Horizon accident. Anadarko, which had a 25% interest in the Macondo prospect, will pay BP $4bn in a single cash payment. BP will apply the payment to the $20bn trust it established that is available to meet individual, business and government claims, as well as the cost of the natural resource damages. Anadarko will also transfer all of its 25% interest in the MC252 (Macondo) lease to BP. BP has awarded engineering and project management services (EPMS) firm AMEC with £150m contract to provide EPMS for its "giant" Clair oil field.Heading the other way was G4S after announcing plans to create the world's largest security and facilities services group with the huge £5.2bn purchase of ISS. The transaction will be funded through a combination of new debt facilities and a seven for six rights issue at a price of 122p, a hefty discount to Friday's closing price of 275.2p, which will raise around £2bn.There was well-received news elsewhere in the support services sector. Shares in Mouchel jumped, after the provider of outsourced services such as building maintenance and parking enforcement, which appointed David Sugden as interim chairman only last week, announced on Monday that he resigned over the weekend. Shares in property consultant group DTZ took a dive after it announced that majority shareholder Saint Georges Participations has decided not to proceed with a bid for the company.shares in Low & Bonar fell back after the maker of industrial fabrics issued a mixed trading update. The company expects profits for the full year to be in line with expectations. "We are pleased to be able to report that the overall demand for our key products continues to be robust, and we expect that volumes will be ahead of the second half of last year, despite strong comparatives in that period," the company said. Irish oil exploration group Petrel was soaring after it announced that it has been awarded two licensing options to explore in the prospective Porcupine Basin off the coast of the emerald isle. "We have already started initial work and look forward to executing this exciting project," managing director David Horgan said. "There will be discoveries in the Irish offshore."FTSE 100 - RisersBP (BP.) 425.55p +2.20%Man Group (EMG) 160.80p +2.03%Amec (AMEC) 876.00p +1.74%Essar Energy (ESSR) 286.00p +1.42%National Grid (NG.) 638.00p +0.87%Royal Dutch Shell 'B' (RDSB) 2,241.00p +0.81%Marks & Spencer Group (MKS) 334.90p +0.75%Standard Chartered (STAN) 1,429.00p +0.74%Whitbread (WTB) 1,627.00p +0.74%Hammerson (HMSO) 417.50p +0.65%FTSE 100 - FallersG4S (GFS) 219.90p -22.10%ITV (ITV) 62.40p -3.93%GKN (GKN) 190.30p -3.69%Antofagasta (ANTO) 1,078.00p -3.58%Inmarsat (ISAT) 456.00p -3.57%Tullow Oil (TLW) 1,375.00p -3.44%Glencore International (GLEN) 408.00p -3.43%Serco Group (SRP) 499.50p -3.20%IMI (IMI) 784.00p -3.15%Kazakhmys (KAZ) 872.50p -3.06%FTSE 250 - RisersPremier Foods (PFD) 4.79p +6.33%Centamin Egypt Ltd.
