Cyclical stocks such as those in the mining and banking sectors were under the weather on Friday afternoon as sentiment on global stock markets continues to be hampered by concerns about Greece's finances.Talvivaara, the FTSE 250 nickel miner, was suffering heavy falls today, pushing the industrial metals and mining sector to the bottom of the pile. Sentiment was dampened today, just one day after disappointing with its third-quarter results, on rumours that it had failed to plug a waste water leak at one of its sites in Finland. The leakage, first reported on Monday, relates to the gypsum pond in eastern Finland. In a statement on Wednesday, the company said that it had located the leak and the flow was successfully stemmed, saying that metals production should start back up by this coming weekend. However, according to Reuters today, high levels of uranium have been found near the mine and leakage problems have resumed. The company yesterday reported third-quarter net sales of €44.8m compared to €60.6m in the same period in 2011.Shares were down a whopping 14.27% at 104.25p this afternoon.Elsewhere in the sector, Evraz, London Mining and Ferrexpo were also suffering steep losses. The banks were also out of favour today on concerns over the Eurozone. Barclays, RBS and Lloyds were among the worst performers on the FTSE 100.Meanwhile, HSBC was being weighed down by reports that it is under investigation over the alleged loss of data and that criminals have used accounts at its operation in the tax haven of Jersey to evade tax and launder money. The bank said: "We are investigating the reports of an alleged loss of certain client data in Jersey as a matter of urgency. "We have not been notified of any investigation in relation to this matter by HMRC or any other authority but, should we receive notification, we will cooperate fully with the authorities."
