The Oxford University and AstraZeneca vaccine trials reached 90% efficacy by accident thanks to the “serendipity” of an error that led to some participants receiving half doses, it has emerged.
On Monday scientists revealed that the Oxford vaccine had an overall efficacy of 70%, but could be around 90% effective when administered as a half dose followed by a full dose a month later.
“The reason we had the half dose is serendipity,” said Mene Pangalos, executive vice-president of biopharmaceuticals research and development at AstraZeneca.
When university researchers were distributing the vaccine at the end of April, around the start of Oxford and AstraZeneca’s partnership, they noticed expected side effects such as fatigue, headaches or arm aches were milder than expected.
“So we went back and checked … and we found out that they had underpredicted the dose of the vaccine by half,” said Pangalos.
Instead of restarting the trial, he said researchers decided to continue with the half dose and administer the full dose booster shot at the scheduled time.
About 3,000 people were given the half dose and then a full dose four weeks later, with data showing 90% were protected. In the larger group, who were given two full doses also four weeks apart, efficacy was 62%.
Vaccine results bring us a step closer to ending Covid, says Oxford scientist
Scientists said they still could not fully explain why the half dose gave better protection, but said it may be that it triggers the immune system differently.
Prof Sarah Gilbert from Oxford University, who led the research, said: “It could be that by giving a small amount of the vaccine to start with and following up with a big amount, that’s a better way of kicking the immune system into action and giving us the strongest immune response and the most effective immune response.”
Prof Andrew Pollard, director of the Oxford Vaccine Group and chief investigator of the trial, added: “What we don’t know at this moment is whether that difference is in the quality or the quantity of immune response. And that’s something we’re going to be digging into over the next weeks.”
The vaccine still needs to be approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, but could be made available in the coming weeks if given the go-ahead
Seriously are you suggesting they are putting out fake adverts !

'Due to a fundamental issue' - do you have a specific piece of knowledge or is that just a hunch?
Ofcourse there are no antigen sales - we are not making it yet!
I've been in omega for a while now but recently sold .As with so many Covid stocks ( and others too ) its always " Next Week " or Next Month " .I believe that this company is an honourably run one , but I also believe the board lacks a certain Pzazz. There should have been much more action here in the form of orders and much better PR too from Wallbrook , who I believe are sub standard when it comes to Omega .The 2 speeding tickets were disgraceful too when you consider the ridiculous daily price hikes of other companies that are based on absolutely nothing .I wish the company and shareholders good luck as I believe the product here is second to none .but like many , I am sick of hearing about Mologic and India ,and all the other ramptastic stuff .Especially on Twitter. It's been the same old thing for months now and I'm sure many holders here need action instead of just words .The vaccine may need to be accompanied by large scale Antibody testing which would be ideal for Omega .The shareholders here deserve rewarding for what seems to me to bea very frustrating and lengthy roller coaster ride .
As I've stated recently this ride is over.
Zero sales to India / Africa
No mhra approval - this I believe is due to a fundamental issue and hence why ciga can no longer provide a date when the rtc product will be available even for professional use.
No sales for antigen.
As vaccines come closer what one rather have... A test or the vaccine?
I mentioned this before the longer odx take the closer to a solution we'll be at...
It's the mindset of CK being a CEO of a small company in the middle of nowhere.
He needs to think big and drive those plans forward. I seriously started to ask questions, when the sales did not materialise. And found he was very late to hiring sales staff.
CK is too reactive.
I sold out this morning at 50 for a profit, not as much as I would have liked but better a profit than loss. I'll buy back in once I know exactly what is going on with ODX on Monday.
There is a very interesting post on another b board relating to testing going forward after covid. That would rreally change things. Omega could be manufacturing for a great number of years if that is the case.
yes
I cant speak for anyone else, but the problem for me is now trust. We have had a terrible chain of events and for me the largest holder that was here way before covid has departed right in the middle of the bad news. The company should and still could issue some sort of update. Certainly before the interims. Why are we not regularly receiving updates on Moligic. Even if they say where it is currently being trialed with feedback at the end of each trial. You cannot tell me that Omega is not regularly in contact with them.
Appears I missed a critical letter in that heading, thank you for pointing that out JHolder! It is really hard to speculate on the share price and the movements over the short term, but if we stick with the business fundamentals there is a massive amount going for this company over the next 12months. They have also been really good at hitting committed deadlines, so the next month could be transformational.
* recovery, the rockery is on hold until next spring
The virus isn’t going to disappear overnight and testing will be around for years.
The sp is being messed about by the mm’s.
Stop ya bloody panicking and block the ones who don’t know what they are talking about.
Massively disappointing that we are here but come Jan omega are going to be cracking out 10m test a month, you wouldn’t ramp up without orders to satisfy those so there is defiantly some news due soon. Forget MHRA, can’t see that making any difference now...10m tests a month for surveillance is fine by me...just hope it’s reflected in the SP soon. Bumpy ride at present with vaccine news and rockery really hammering these stocks. I still believe, where has the belief gone from this board because nothing has changed? We knew a vaccine would arrive but we also know COVID isn’t going to just pi55 off....
There are 7.8 billion people in the world who will require a vaccine, most probably multiple times over the years until COVID is irradiated if it ever is. We have a gold standard antibody test which is based around using with the Astra Zeneca jab (you know, the one which is going to treat 90 percent of the world) not to mention an antigen test from Mologic as an added bonus ...... and yet people are bed wetting about sales? Hilarious! Grow a set people and either add or sit on your hands. If you can’t do that then you should be putting your money in premium bonds.
