FTSE 100 to start higher as US stock volatility continues ahead of Fed meeting
London's bluechip benchmark is seen around 65 points higher with just over an hour to go until the open
Looks increasingly like Russia is rowing back from invading Ukraine.
The Beijing Olympics now start in less than 10 days, and Xi is not gonna let Vlad spoil his big show.
Ukraine looking safer (for now).
"Interest payments on central government debt were £8.1 billion in December 2021, a December record and £5.4 billion more than in December 2020, albeit lower than in June 2021 when interest payments were £9.0 billion."
LTI suggested higher tax take would pay above and that is true to some extent for PAYE were business has been desperate to take on gig workers for more permanent staff, however if inflation is running at 6.9% wouldn't VAT receipts at least have to match this and not 2.3% reported.

I wasn't aware that you had actually read it Theosus.
But he did come out with some gems.
Ah yes, Robert Sears, who wrote such literary classes as......
"By the best selling author of the beautiful poetry of Donald Trump."
I'm sure Putin was elated about that. :~}
theosus that picture of putin on the book cover sitting on the windowsill in ripped jeans/t shirt and bare feet....a bit weird imo.
It was this attitude that led to WW2.Give Putin an inch and he will take a yard
================================
What a lot of rubbish I read in this tread. Last time I checked it was the Nazi that started ww2.
And about the Americans I was just watching yesterday on RAI3 the CIA secret service involvement in Italian terrorist attacks in Bologna and others, where hundred of people lost their lives in the 80s. Mafia, Loggia P2 and other, Italian extreme right wings and US secret service, all conspiring against government which back then was trying to create a bipartisan agreement with the communist party, in trying to run the country. They killed hundred of innocent citizens to destabilize the Country and put in power their men, things that they have been doing for decades all around the world. Putin is a Saint.

"Russia simply do not like having INDEPENDENT countries under the protection of Nato next to them."
Which is what I said in my post at 10:35!
You could start a fight in an empty house! Do you argue with your own reflection in the mirror when having a shave! lol
hu
The eastern bloc were under the control and influence of the Soviet Union.
Russia simply do not like having INDEPENDENT countries under the protection of Nato next to them.
I'll be happier when it hits 55p again! Took 8 days to fall from 55p to where we are now. Lets hope it only takes 8 days to get back there!

forget Russia and USA , LLOY just hit 51p ,nice

"The USSR were on the doorstep of Nato countries."
They were, but the motherland Russia was not. The territory overtaken by the Red Army during the final stages of the 2nd world war became satellite states of the Eastern Bloc and was a buffer zone between Russia and the west. Russia no longer has that buffer zone.

Yes Norway has a smaller population and is in no hurry to increase it by millions every decade, for some reason we are and do!.
Some do not wish us to spend money on the military, but ignore that we contribute towards our potential enemies military build up . Both Russia and China use our money towards building their militaries.

''the Russians do not want NATO and Americans on their doorstep.
The USSR were on the doorstep of Nato countries.
America is on the doorstep of Russia - 2 and a half miles between american and Russian islands.
Banking shares are in demand on the basis they should benefit from any further interest rate rises.
The Bank of England may well raise the cost of borrowing again at its February meeting after it belatedly moved in December.
NatWest Group PLC (LSE:NWG) is up 3.57%, helped by UBS analysts upgrading their recommendation to buy.
The move came in a positive note of the sector: "We believe UK banks are attractively valued, absolutely and relatively, given the combination of payouts and profit gearing we expect to play out."
Lloyds Banking Group PLC (LSE:LLOY) has been lifted by 3.43%, Barclays PLC (LSE:BARC) by 3.04% and Standard Chartered PLC (LSE:STAN) by 3.87%.
The writing was on the wall when the Americans elected Biden. The debacle of Afghanistan provided an early confirmation that the roll of the US as peace keeper is over. As many opined at the time, the election of Biden has made the world a more dangerous place. The MSM is oddly silent on this.

''North sea oil revenue was squandered unlike Norway who invested it .''
They have a population about 15 times less.
I imagine the Shetland islands could quickly amass a substantial fund per head of population from oil should they ever vote to be independent.
Imho it's all just a smoke screen. Another label of divide so nobody can discuss the true 17611 deaths only of covid (ONS) or the parties of do as I say not as I do. Or the fact we are in the midst of a self created depression by politicians that have all been following the same narrative around the globe whilst fleecing the tax payer all the while. Or the fact that the be all and end all of all this b0110x5 is those that had money and assets are now pegged down and worth a whole lot less than they would of been had we not created the ripe environment for a banking crisis. We don't want to let those below us come too close to our level in society. We are the ones who own the monopoly to financial success and will never relinquish that power. Or fight the wars we use to create divide. Let's add 1% on to national insurance that's on top of the 1.5% previously addedbut we won't call it a 2.5% rise in NI. Let's get those fuel bills up £1200 a year keep petrol at around £1.50 a litre, wages low interest rates higher. It's all designed to keep the divided working person divided and down. Never mind a war against Russia they need to shore up the defenses of London from their own people first IMHO
Bertram,
Not trying to get involved here but lots of media chat about "nasty" Putin but we have history.
Like bombing 7 bells out of a country just because its no longer "the done thing" being seen to be on good terms with him.
And not just one country.
"It was this attitude that led to WW2.Give Putin an inch and he will take a yard."
Did the Americans not act in a similar way back in 1962 with the Cuban missile crisis? They did not want the Russians on their doorstep and to deploy nuclear missiles on Cuba. Similarly, the Russians do not want NATO and Americans on their doorstep, so are against the Ukraine becoming a member of NATO. I guess they are getting paranoid about loosing their buffer zone of the Eastern Bloc countries which they had during the cold war.
SS,
" I resent our tax pounds paying for military vanities." That's OK, and your opinion. You are free to voice an opinion because we spend on military "vanities". In the 1930,s Britain was caught with its pants down when a vicious dictator started annexing other countries. Seem familiar? We were not ready. And now we have another nasty individual, Adolf Putin, following a similar path. Twice recently he has sent agents with radioactive poison and novichok poison to our country. Not the actions of a friend. Prepare for war to keep the peace.
Have noted that the good old BBC have made Boris's birthday cake more important than a looming and economically disastrous war. Blinkered idi0t5.
