Terraplane...you're missing the point. When have I supported what Putin and Russia did or does? You are slating Russia whilst classifying US UK as amongst civilised nations, and I have countered that. Russia have done many evil things, but in my opinion that is lot less compared to the what the so called 'civilised' world have done and been doing for centuries. Look at the flash points around the globe today and you will find UK will have had a hand in creating many of them (divide and rule).
Large swathes of Africa and Latin America (victims of US UK tyrrany) leaning towards Russia in this conflict is a testamony to what I'm trying to say here.
Again, get your facts right and go lecture the ignorants of this world.
Dear John
When all you have to offer is what-about-ery, you have no argument.
So let's play that game for a minute:
What about the Russian empire subjugating central asian countries and Mongolia, what about the Soviet Union subjecting people to 70 years of abject misery by denying them the right to live in freedom from oppression. Remember the slaughter of Polish people at Katyn? Remember the mass executions and imprisonment of millions in Gulags? Remember Hungary in 1956? Prague in 1968? The invasion of Afghanistan? How about the destruction of thousands of Orthdox Churches and the murder of thousands of priests? Shall I keep going or do you the message?
Your ignorance is pathetic.
Terraplane...when you mention civilised world, I'm assuming you are counting US and UK amongst them; two countries which have destabilised this world for centuries. Look what they did to Vietnam, Iraq, Libya etc from which we have still not recovered (mass migration), they've overthrown governments, they've sown seeds of hatred in order to conquer and rule and still not apologised eg. almost the entire Africa is leaning towards Russia in the current conflict, not because they have hatred towards Ukraine, but because they blame US UK for fanning the conflict.
Go and take your long lectures to the ignorants of this world.
Sounds about right Terraplane. The Russian population is roughly spread 75% in Europe 25% in Asia. Meaning over a 100 million Russians are in Europe. They have the worlds allocation of natural resources, great scientists, their own space program etc etc. So why aren’t they an economic power in Europe like Germany is? Because the country has never been managed to anywhere near its full potential. Putin could have made these changes 20+ years ago. Stamped out corruption, developed a strong middle class. But he didn’t. He craves to be a super power on the global stage but he isn’t. Now he’s resorted to murdering people to try and project some kind of power.
As for Ukraine they can absolutely win the war given the right equipment and support. The Mujahedin beet the soviets didn’t they, the Vietnamese beat the Americans? I think Putin is a desperate man who won’t be missed by anyone.
JohnNth - Still pedding the same old rubbish I see.
Russia is struggling big time with their soviet-era weapons and soviet-era soldiers. The plan is failing and will continue to fail because they have no plan other than to destroy as much of Ukraine's infrastructure as possible. Zelensky won't be replaced just because Russia want him out of the way so as to install a puppet government. When Finland and Norway are full members of NATO, Russia will be cattle-trucked. There is no way that the US or Europe will turn away and leave Ukraine to be subsumed back into Russia, it is no longer an option. Russia wanted a quick and easy invasion to subjugate a country that they believed was theirs by right. It isn't. Putin has failed and what's more, he's a very sick man and from what I saw whilst I was in Moscow for the last three weeks, a lot of Russians - especially those underthe age of 40 - are sick of him and sick of being treated like the scum of the earth through no fault of their own. They've got used to having the freedom to travel, to spend money, to have aspirations, not to be dragged back to god-awful soviet conditions. Many Russians don't agree with the war and they don't like the consequences of being scapegaoted by a man with a grudge. The desperation of Putin is clear to see. TV and radio pump out "news" about Ukraine 24 hours a day, every Russian lost in the war is considered a crime perpetrated by Ukraine, and yet not a single word of regret is ever offered about any Ukrainian killed by the indvaders - Russia. The words "war" or "invasion" are banned on all media outlets. It's a joke. The constant beligerant threats against Finland and Norway for having the nerve to protect themselves by joining NATO, the threat to cut off gas supplies to Europe, the threats of nuclear war...it never stops. Russia cannot win this war, all they can win is universal condemnation and eternal disgust. Russia will never again be anything but a pariah state in the eyes of the civilised world. They have no friends except for Belearus, Syria and now Iran. Turkey are trying to ride two horses at once but when it comes down to it, Erdogan will abandon any pretence of friendship with Russia. However, for China it's a bonus because they are buying up oil, gas and just about everything else from Russia at bargain prices, whilst Russians are now paying more for petrol than the Chinese. China are taking everything they can get and give nothing in return. Great leadership from Putin. He is yesterday's man, a would-be dictator with an enormous grudge against just about everyone. He could have done so much to make Russia a great nation, an open nation, a nation that became rich and successful by trade. But no. Putin decided to be Hitler instead. Nobody will shed a tear when he dies, especially Russians.
lol.
Alex- I am sure the west has done all the same and much more. Nobody is an angel here.
Russia is winning . The US and UK have no interest in Ukraine other than to poke at Putin, for a laugh.
alex1978uk...I'm certain Ukraine will get rid of Zelensky long before Putin goes, cos he has fkd up big time; read my previous posts. Further, Zelensky knows Republicans could make big gains in mid term elections in the US later this year, and they do not support Ukraine to the levels of Democrats, and hence this urgency to regain lost land before the elections. More Republicans view the war as a european problem and hence no need for US to to intervene.
Get real, Ukraine cannot win this war; talking peace is their best chance, and Zelensky and UKraine should be doing that before the whole country is turned into a rubble.
And Russia does care? They don’t even bother to repatriate their own dead boys. They’ve backed every dictator, autocrat, war lord etc since the end of the Second World War. Just to oppose the western world.
Ukraine may not be able to drive the Russians out but the Russians will only be able to hold the ground at great cost. The resistance has already started in some areas. The ones that did support Russia have had their lives and homes destroyed.
But very true this is a proxy war and I hope the Ukrainians humiliate Putin and his own people get rid of him. Sleepy Joe needs to grow a pair and give the Ukrainians what they need to finish the job. Jets, longer range weapons etc etc
"New phase of war" initiated by US UK instead of urging Ukraine to talk peace. It is clear both US UK are fighting a proxy war against Russia using Ukraine. The higher the Russian casualties the BIGGER the price Russia will extract during negotiations. One thing is for sure, Ukraine cannot win this war no matter the level of support they get from outside. But does US UK care about this? No they don't as they can just walk away like they have done in many parts of the world. EU does care as they want to admit Ukraine at the earliest oportunity and with most of the coutry in tact. Following US UK advice and encouragement, Ukraine is heading into the abyss, as EU will let Ukraine wait for membership until the country gets back in sort of shape so as not to put too much strain on EU resources.
