You would think it would be ideal time for a “non of the above” type political party.
But I think even now if one appeared it would fail spectacularly.
Last time country was in as much of a mess in the late 70s the unions tried their best to take advantage.Think there is some of that going on again now.
Think some of the unions just look for a fight.
However I will say that the disconnect between the salary of the guy at the bottom and the boss at the top is all wrong .
The guy at the top should never be almost earning in millions what the guy or girl at the bottom earns in thousands.
They need each other.
probro.
I get the distinct impression you are not too fond of the Labour party!!
All you say is spot on-the oiks who purport to run this country, of whatever leaning, have always been totally divorced from reality hence the appalling messes and crises we have had to endure for several decades at their grossly incompetent hands. The major problem is they don't listen to the Electorate-well, they do but it goes in one ear etc etc.
Where else can you get a job paying £80k pa plus £200k pa expenses without any qualifications apart from a big mouth the ability to lie through your teeth AND with little or no accountability. Unfair comment on those MP's who genuinely have their Constituents' interests at heart I'll grant you which is why they spend most of their parliamentary career on the back benches.
Re taxation, BP has handed over $17.4billion in taxes over the last 5 years-how much more do the Reds want?? As for your comment about pension funds suffering from more taxation don't forget my Friend that MP's and the Public Sector care not a jot. THEIR pensions are taxpayer funded, index-linked and totally secure.
In these days when "equality" "inclusion" and all the other buzzwords trotted out by the Chattering Classes and bandied around with great gusto by MP's this two tier pension system seems to get ignored.
Oh! what a surprise!
PS
and now the RMT, big donors to the Labour Party, wants to bring the country to a halt in the midst of poss, the worst mess we have been in for years-you couldn't make it up.!!
Pass the puke bag Alice.
:)
Ah I stand corrected!
I am not sure this can be right. Pink Floyd were in Moscow in 1989. The Rosneft IPO was in 2006.
Totally agree there are a lot of people with agenda’s and BP are stuck in the middle
Good afternoon meoryou. .I agree with your post. But the reporting has been one sided.
They have not gone into the costs which are still being paid for The Deep water Horizon disaster plus Rosneft There are no guarantees we will get anything for Rosneft.
How many businesses in these days can take a hit of that magnitude. We need better reporting
on the situation for both sides

I a not really in favour of the Windfall tax either.
I think it’s the wrong tax at the wrong time.
And means you are relying on government making a better job on spending the energy money , than an energy company.
It’s governments that have got us in this mess.
But as I have said it’s not going away.
The media and non governing parties see it as a good cause to be fighting for the poorer people.
However if we don’t pay anything and BP sells their stake in Rosneft watch it all go mental.
I would like a one off agreement that targets all ( especially Tech),is based on UK profits and had agreement of all political parties that Windfall tax is then off table for good.If they want to tax profits make the current system cover it.
Then BP can get on with running an Energy company without this distraction.
And if BP do sell Rosneft they can use proceeds as they wish including a special div if they think it best without becoming a political football.
Excellent post. How many billions is the question for the windfall tax?
Plus as you said Tech companies to pay the tax, + Tesco ,Waitrose ,Insurance companies and many more
.
Theaky,Spights
It is not going to go away.
The media will keep it fresh.
Can see an argument for a one off based on UK profits.
But looking at all larger companies especially Tech.
But it has to be a one off , and then profit for future fully covered by whatever tax system Government has in place.
If it’s wrong they should change it not just go after low hanging fruit.
I do not agree with a wind fall tax on oil companies
As this would deter investments else where
It’s a difficult one.Bp is a business and it has taken a huge hit with Rosneft.I am sure they had their hands tied to do this. Many years for Bp have not been easy. Plus all the Green projects they have invested in. There are so many business that have done well with the covId situation .
Plus all the fraud. why just single oil companies?
As a PR it would be good for Bp to pay a windfall tax. B
Can't believe I'm writing this, but I think it's possibly time BP offers to pay a windfall tax on profits derived from the UK only. The calls will only get louder. Too many people have sat on there backsides during the lockdowns gorging on other people's money. It was and is the pensioners that were the most affected, with dividend slashed or cancelled with no furlough cash to soften the blow.
It is also time BP supported the thousands of pensioners who have invested in BP as a substantial part of their pensions. The dividend is woeful when compared as a percentage of original investment.
