So a small we are all nattering about politics and world affairs, our little FKIR rises nicely.
Free up the red tape!
Yep UKIP voters... If UKIP could get their act together they could be serious challengers to the political system in the UK (even in Scotland and NI) Farage with his new found political wealth has a huge opportunity.
Trump won and the America lost and is now lost.
They never polled the "deplorables" . A huge tranch of the Trump vote was from disgruntled white lower/middle class males who never previously voted and felt totally disenfranchised. Everywhere I went dealing with these good and honest people , it was the D word.
Boy, were you on the money in your early Wed post about pro-Trump support experienced while travelling in the US. Who were the pollsters polling I wonder? By the way, Wilbur Ross slated as Commerce Secretary in Trump Administration.
Where then, ah! where, shall poverty reside, To ’scape the pressure of contiguous pride? If, to some common’s fenceless limits strayed, 65 He drives his flock to pick the scanty blade, Those fenceless fields the sons of wealth divide, And even the bare-worn common is denied. If to the city sped, what waits him there? To see profusion that he must not share; 70 To see ten thousand baneful arts combined To pamper luxury, and thin mankind; To see each joy the sons of pleasure know Extorted from his fellow-creatures’ woe. Here while the courtier glitters in brocade, 75 There the pale artist plies the sickly trade; Here while the proud their long-drawn pomps display, There the black gibbet glooms beside the way. The dome where Pleasure holds her midnight reign, Here, richly decked, admits the gorgeous train; 80 Tumultuous grandeur crowds the blazing square— The rattling chariots clash, the torches glare. Sure scenes like these no troubles e’er annoy! Sure these denote one universal joy! Are these thy serious thoughts? Ah! turn thine eyes 85 Where the poor, houseless, shivering female lies; She once, perhaps, in village plenty blest, Has wept at tales of innocence distrest; Her modest looks the cottage might adorn, Sweet as the primrose peeps beneath the thorn; 90 Now lost to all—her friends, her virtue fled— Near her betrayer’s door she lays her head; And, pinched with cold, and shrinking from the shower, With heavy heart deplores that luckless hour When, idly first, ambitious of the town, 95 She left her wheel, and robes of country brown.… O luxury! thou curst by Heaven’s decree, How ill exchanged are things like these for thee! How do thy potions, with insidious joy, Diffuse their pleasures only to destroy! 100 Kingdoms by thee, to sickly greatness grown, Boast of a florid vigor not their own. At every draught more large and large they grow, A bloated mass of rank unwieldy woe; Till sapped their strength, and every part unsound, 105 Down, down they sink, and spread a ruin round. Oliver Goldsmith
SWEET-SMILING village, loveliest of the lawn! Thy sports are fled, and all thy charms withdrawn; Amidst thy bowers the tyrant’s hand is seen, And desolation saddens all thy green; One only master grasps the whole domain, 5 And half a tillage stints thy smiling plain; No more thy glassy brook reflects the day, But, choked with sedges, works its weedy way; Along thy glades, a solitary guest, The hollow-sounding bittern guards its nest; 10 Amidst thy desert walks the lapwing flies, And tires their echoes with unvaried cries; Sunk are thy bowers in shapeless ruin all, And the long grass o’ertops the mouldering wall; And, trembling, shrinking from the spoiler’s hand; 15 Far, far away thy children leave the land. Ill fares the land, to hastening ills a prey, Where wealth accumulates, and men decay: Princes and lords may flourish, or may fade— A breath can make them, as a breath has made: 20 But a bold peasantry, their country’s pride, When once destroyed, can never be supplied. A time there was, ere England’s griefs began, When every rood of ground maintained its man; For him light labor spread her wholesome store, 25 Just gave what life required, but gave no more: His best companions, innocence and health; And his best riches, ignorance of wealth. But times are altered: trade’s unfeeling train Usurp the land, and dispossess the swain; 30 Along the lawn, where scattered hamlets rose, Unwieldy wealth and cumbrous pomp repose; And every want to luxury allied, And every pang that folly pays to pride, Those gentle hours that plenty bade to bloom, 35 Those calm desires that asked but little room, Those healthful sports that graced the peaceful scene, Lived in each look, and brightened all the green— These, far departing, seek a kinder shore, And rural mirth and manners are no more.… 40 Ye friends to truth, ye statesmen, who survey The rich man’s joys increase, the poor’s decay, ’Tis yours to judge how wide the limits stand Between a splendid and a happy land. Proud swells the tide with loads of freighted ore, 45 And shouting Folly hails them from her shore; Hoards, e’en beyond the miser’s wish, abound, And rich men flock from all the world around. Yet count our gains; this wealth is but a name, That leaves our useful products still the same. 50 Not so the loss: the man of wealth and pride Takes up a space that many poor supplied; Space for his lake, his park’s extended bounds, Space for his horses, equipage, and hounds; The robe that wraps his limbs in silken sloth, 55 Has robbed the neighboring fields of half their growth; His seat, where solitary sports are seen, Indignant spurns the cottage from the green; Around the world each needful product flies, For all the luxuries
Very much enjoyed Mr Mac's contribution and assessment of the Trump effect on Ireland and have to agree with every word of it. However I seem to remember the shout of YES WE CAN and Margarets recitation of Saint Anthony's prayer. Washington has been described as a swamp - it defeated Obama because the Crocodiles in the swamp are well dug in and know how to induce paralysis.

But had an excellent round on the course - reminded me of playing in Sligo at Rosses Point - when the wind blows there. Came home and guess what, our share has risen in spite of everything and somebody is talking about the Zoo, bad memory, lost my clubs there when somebody stole them out of my boot. Noticed that we are still experiencing interference on the forum - what a pity that we can't do what I do with my T V when we suffer interference - re-tune manually. Much as I am loath to do it I have decided to investigate FILTERING. Good luck all....
What Radar was explaining is (I presume) what I am learning is called Tax Loss Selling. As Bof I dropped significantly this year with the difficulties in China and then Brexit are other sons exercising this stratagem to offset CGT on future gains?
the big winner on the US markets today. I guess looking after Hillary will be good for business.
Well the € has gone from a basket case and is now a safe haven currency. Just tell you where we are now. 87..88 is 21c territory for bkir. "Make America great again" is beginning to sound a bit like " Brexit means Brexit."
We're you at the zoo too? Walking and talking with hotdog no doubt
Creeping up again; has to br good news for our agri sector etc. Might save more mushroom farmers from going bust....
Cooked was the 5ad 6a5tard sad on his on in the corner.
How did you know which one I was
Your at it again! Trolling your usual measly barbs. U couldn't give a flying fugh if BOI went from hero to zero or viva versa, likewise what is happening in one of the largest political areas worldwide.....you have no business here . All u do is have a go at us. I was at the zoo recently and went to the chimps enclosure and then I thought of you......how sad and how true .
Try to stick to the topics being discussed rather than continuously resorting to personal attacks. You might more rspect.
I think Cagney and Lacey aka hotdog and deadcat should walk the walk and talk the talk and become pollister's It's a no brainer Let's call a spade a spade Good call hotdog well done I don't know how you do it
I think the markets were supported this morning. I'm thinking this is the beginning of the end of the EU.
Brexit Trump Europe next , just wondering G L A
You have to hand it to Trump. He has an uncanny ability to find out what his audience wants to hear and tell them that without a care in the world. He did it again this morning. After months of bigoted, hate filled talk aimed at a specific demographic that he decided were weak and ready to believe anything that reinforced their own prejudices he came out this morning to tell the world that he will unite America and be a president for ALL the people. Just what we all wanted to hear. Markets relaxed because Trump is just really a nice misunderstood guy that said a few things in the heat of battle to get a few extra votes. Well its too late. Radar is right. You can't rise the masses and then just send them home. Someone has to pay the ferryman for the trip. So, he brings home the jobs. From where. Ireland. how is that a positive for us. So he gets rid of illegals. 50,000 are Irish. How is that a positive for us. He strikes a tax deal with the corporates and maybe reduces the US tax to 15% as promised. No advantage to us either. Stop the radicals. The US created the most of them in the first place and Trump said he will bomb the **** out of them. Hardly going to solve any problems here or in europe.. Banking and QE. Years of hard times to right a problem that originated in the US due to lax rules and easy money. Just when things were coming right he plans to undo all the regulations and have us back to square one is a few years. probably based on his own experiences he thinks the banks are too strict on lending. As a 4 maybe 5 times bankrupt they might have good reason to be weary of him. He is the ultimate boom bust guy. To fix the states he plans to borrow more. he has no interest in the nation debt been under control. That will lead to a weak dollar. Bad for our exporters tourism. He plans to frack more and return to coal mining. he has no interest in climate change either. The western worlds middle classes, including in ireland, are fearful and in a very bad bind. That is what Trump played on to get elected and Brexit passed. There is no way a (supposed) billionaire elite guy like this is the answer to their problems. I would love to be totally wrong on Trump but I'm not hopeful.
He is the new reality so I guess we are best getting used to the idea. First test is to see how the situation chsnges on the ground in Syria. Maybe he is the new 'Messiah', let's see, as hotdog said, 'he talks the talk, let's see if he walks the walk'. I hope the American people don't end up disappointed.
