Yes Aug, that is a very good point indeed.
Hi aug. Point taken
Yes... those well run countries known for their democratic processes. Say what you like about Putin, but we’d have had our mine in 6-months lol!
Great read, thanks Pocko! Behind countries such as Russia, Mali and Ghana - It's insane.. But very nice to hear from Kurt again along with Maria Suner & Lars Hjälmered too.
A very critical piece... well worth fully translating and reading...
And a little more...
How does it feel to know that you could have been up and running for several years if you had received the permit that Bergsstaten gave ok to five years ago?
- If I look back I get very angry so I have to look forward. But now it's enough! It is not possible to first open up for foreign companies and investors to come here and create economic activity and jobs, and then delay it by not making decisions.
Do not give up
But he still does not give up. After the constitutional committee criticized the government in November for not having done anything with Beowulf's three-year application, he hopes a decision is imminent.
- When I think of what is really my job, not the politics around, I am very excited. In Sweden, there is everything to build a successful, sustainable mining project - renewable electricity, a long mining tradition, a high level of competence and innovation in mining and the production of fossil-free steel.
A little more outspoken...
Even if everything goes as it should from today, it will have taken almost 20 years from Beowulf receiving his first exploration permit in 2006 until production can begin, he states.
- It's ridiculous! We should have received our processing concession in 2016. Then we would have been in production now and been able to take advantage of the fact that iron ore prices are the highest in ten years. And Jokkmokk municipality had not had to cut their budget as they have done in recent years.
Patience? Might be a while longer...
Mining permit in long bench - then investments and jobs end up abroad
Permit processes for mining of up to 20 years. Now companies are getting tired and investments and jobs are ending up in other countries. At the same time, Minister of Trade and Industry Ibrahim Baylan is ducking because Sweden's international reputation as a mining nation is plummeting.
Kurt Budge is CEO of the company Beowulf Mining, which wants to establish an iron ore mine in Kallak near Jokkmokk. For him, it comes as no surprise that the attractiveness of Sweden as a mining country has fallen so rapidly.
- I'm not surprised. Since taking office, the government has talked about transparency and predictability, but we mining companies are still left out completely. This also applies to all the authorities involved in mining permits.
Beowulf has been involved in the Kallak mine for 15 years and has invested a total of SEK 80 million. In the autumn of 2015, the government received a recommendation from the Swedish mining inspectorate Bergsstaten, to give the company permission to go ahead and build the Kallak mine. But still the condition shines with its absence.

Evening.. 3cardbrag, KB, has stated, BEFORE any comments are made by UNESCO, “it’s not a matter for UNESCO ” That assertion may yet have to be argued in a court of law, should BEM have to challenge the decision…. It would be madness imo for KB to say, or do anything more at this time, where Lawyers could then argue in the future that his previous contact with UNESCO demonstrates that KB himself, did indeed place value on their comments, but only BEFORE, they commented! You take risks with Baylan at your peril, he’s a lying deceitful bsd… Asking Baylan to make a decision, is a different matter! Imo only. atb…
It will budge eventually (sorry for the pun). No other outcome after all this apart from positive decision in one form or another
unesco will not make one bit of difference to Kallak at all" it is just politics the green need there votes , we just have to face it that mine will never open as long as the green party are in control the time is now rite for Kurt to put the boot in win or lose there is no choice , a lot of lth will be pushing up roses the way this is moving , so kurt put your size 12 on and do the business
lbjj. Which begs the question, "Why hasn't Kurt sought confirmation from UNESCO that they have responded?"
Or has he?
I have been dumping, while you've been giving gardening advice and crap songs on YouTube and basically being an annoying opinionated old lady I've taken care of my affairs...I bet your neighbors hate you also...
An update would be good. I’d certainly like the real explanation as to why drilling at Kallak was ‘delayed’. I don’t buy the Covid reason. No doubt politically, and we’ll likely never know. The drill bit putting pounds on the SP? Lmao...
Still in then Roller...you were going to start dumping on 24 January when it was 5.5p, you've missed a nice little profit on your options. What kept you then?
He is bastard useless...
Silence zzzzzzzzz
And when he does eventually surface, I imagine he’ll witter on about Vardar and not mention Kallak.
His performance has gone downhill alarmingly since the last election.
I noted Kurt was keen to state that his letter should be sent to Mechtild Rössler Director of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre and the Heritage Division.
Pocko, I don’t share that opinion – regardless of UNESCO’s comments.. atb………….
UNESCO aren’t going to be complicit with a government by way of a pre-agreed response to the application. Unless of course it’s negative...
Pocko, that is exactly what it suggests!!!.. Who would voluntarily put a witness on the stand, not knowing what they are going to say, not a politician – for sure!!! Atb…
Ibjj, ok, got that! atb…
Hello aug,
Here's my take. UNESCO have already replied saying "nowt to do with us"
Whilst not disclosing the reply, the swedes are clear to progress projects deemed politically acceptable, which does not include Kallak.
Unfortunately aug59, that suggests Baylan knows what the reply from UNESCO will be, and of course he doesn’t. He’s placed kicked it into the unknown for whatever reason, though primarily to avoid responsibility for taking decision, whatever that decision might be. Now we know what the response from UNESCO should be... but who can actually say?
It should play out like that trouble is Sweden's ministers are just as crooked as Trump for example they just do it behind closed doors!
Morning.. Ibjj, “The difference is that no politics are involved in this decision” .. Really?.. So when the minister for enterprise writes to UNESCO, to ask for their opinion on the N. Kallak proposals, de did not consider all of the possibilities that their comments could/would entail, re both Kallak, and for the steel mill, given their very similar distance from Laponia, and their nature? Wow.. Anyway, I think we should welcome this announcement – a GREEN steel mill within shouting distance! Wider possibilities for BEM? All for less than a shilling a ticket, no wonder KB has his feet up, with the KU report in his back pocket… lolol.. Imo only … atb……
