The LFT can be CE marked - self declared, for professional use only by medical device manufacturer when they have met all of the requirements of the directive. They could be placed on the market and sold from that point. (I think for the government to buy though the products have to meet Condor trials.)
For consumer/lay person use, the CE mark has to be approved by a notified body. The notified body will confirm that the manufacturer has all of systems and controls in place as a medical device manufacturer and that the test has been subject to lay persons trials, and that the instructions for use could be understood by lay persons.
Notified Body Technical review is booked up months in advance so I hope the Government would bring pressure on them to expedite and find resource. We need these simple tests.
Worth remembering that compared with normal timescales everything is happening 'soon' and 'shortly'. Can't remember who posted the odds of the next phrase to be used, but I'd like to put forward:
"We will update the market in two shakes of a lamb's tail"
Are we stuck in a loop?
see Badeli's response:
the comparison with Sono is a sensible one and the 7 weeks taken by them to optimise their results seems perfectly reasonable. The timeframe of PIs looking for a swift return compared to that of professional biochemists ensuring that whatever they publish can stand up to international scientific scrutiny and lead to a therapy which will have a positive impact on the fight against Covid-19 is totally different. Dr Al uses words and phrase like 'soon', 'a few weeks' etc without any thoughts of the impact he might have on discussion boards like this! He needs to get it right and science takes as long as science takes! Investors will realise this and are thinking of the share-price in 3 months'time, not this afternoon.
I really do think we have talked about these tests long enough time for some progress and action.
Cue Al.
Al?
Al??
You there???
Just to add, surescreen diagnostics released an antibody pin prick test back in march, but has only been licenced for the test to be performed and interpreted by a trained professional, when I spoke to Tom there they were trying to get approval for home use too, looks like they're still waiting. Maybe the govt will ease regulations to help if it's the only way to get society moving, although tory snouts in the trough may stop that
JRDC, this has been explicitly relayed to the market by Avacta since the beginning of the LFT development programme, months ago. The aim is to get the LFT into professional use markets first, and subsequently into self-testing circulation.
Everyone holding the stock should already know this. It will in absolutely no way cause a hold up in product development, as it has been factored into the development timeline form the beginning.
They’ll CE mark the test. Problem solved.
Is it true that getting approval for home use, ie test to be performed and read by a non professional user, takes longer due to being more stringent than getting approval for use within a clinical setting and/or performed by clinical staff? Will avacta look for clinical use first just to get s product out the door?

and interpreting the results by themselves. No COVID-19 self-test kits have received a CE mark and therefore there are no test kits in the UK suitable for home use.
It is currently illegal to supply test kits for use by members of the public in the UK though this may change if CE-marked self-test kits become available.
I'm heavily invested here so not deramping, but the above could be part of the hold up, at least for use in UK, and I imagine a huge hurdle to overcome if self testing is the target
If they go for “momentarily”, I’m out.
“In a moment” will do nicely, thanks.
I would say (without any technical expertise at all) that if a inactivation step is now required in the UK then regardless of what the rest of the world say they would get this all singing all dancing design.
UNLESS it means they can create a cheaper version without the extra step for third world countries perhaps
But your guess is as good as mine
@Timster Great Post....What are your thoughts on the "adding the blocker" element...If that is something which has been added by UK powers that be...is it necessarily the same for US or other markets? If it wasn't could that mean validation results could be separately timed for each Market? Just Musing
“respective”? I meant repetitive lol
Directly
I still think Turner Pope’s use of “relatively near term” is the classiest example of the variations available in English language compared to today’s kids use of “laters”! Talking of language I’ve detected a touch of Quentin Tarantino in recent posts here. First we had Miles McN using “gargantuan” reminiscent of Elle’s cold delivery to snake-bitten Bud in Kill Bill and now Mia Wallace’s line “two shakes of a lamb’s tail” from Pulp Fiction. Excellent diversions from the usual respective comments on here. GLA LTH
I will add 'Laters' !!!
me! "now in a minute" is the best

still works
@badeli - Exactly, great post
Excellent post, Timster, the comparison with Sono is a sensible one and the 7 weeks taken by them to optimise their results seems perfectly reasonable. Shameless...
Bumping my own post ;)
Now we also know they have had to add the viral inactivation part to the strip.
"These data show that the test strips detect the spike protein in model samples at concentrations within the clinical range found in saliva of patients with COVID-19. Work continues now to refine the test strip design, optimise its performance and get the best detection limit possible in order to generate the highest sensitivity in the final rapid test product."
This was the news 6 weeks ago.
looking at Sona's news flow (who IMO are the best comparison we have) on 12th may they released very similar news 7 weeks later they released their validation results ......
