Bilbo, your local taxi drivers are probably only doing short journeys and probably able to recharge for free at present, so a BEV or Hybrid makes a lot of sense. Of course, it means they can't rev their engine outside to attract attention, though! :)
Our local Bradford Taxi drivers buy electric cars or electric hybrid and they buy whatever is cheapest. They re-sell well. I recent chats I'm told they don't care too much about resell value as they just pass on the old one to the kids/family. I understand that different strokes for different folks but that is a big price differential to overcome.
Maybe Bilbs but not that many will have£38k either. Prices will come down by the time I get seriously interested (hopefully) and don’t forget there are such things as second hand cars? Would you buy a second hand battery powered car and trust it , I know I wouldn’t , I’d need to know it’s recharging and maintenance history.
Any new fuel cell cars will help ITM Motive so fingers crossed it is coming to UK.
Rightly or wrongly it looks like they have chosen to evolve at this stage using an existing model...The fuel cell X5 will use the drive train from iX3 - quote 'This week BMW unveiled its first new all-electric model since quite a long time ago, the BMW iX3, which happens to be also the first with BMW's 5th generation drivetrain, the first electric X3 (and X in general). Additionally, the X3 is the first BMW that will be available as ICE, PHEV and BEV.' I have a diesel X6 which is a brilliant car and no doubt this fuel cell X5 will be also.
Sea, for many of us £12k is small change. But I struggle to see many ready to jump at the opportunity to spend so much more
Just so I understand it BMW are using a centralised power chain to drive an electric car. Why not just directly drive the wheels? Looks like a bit of a rushed job to me.
Speaking as an old dog who can’t cope with new tricks , me. I’d buy a more expensive FC car before landing myself in a battery monitoring / range anxiety nightmare. Maybe not the Mirai , and maybe after we get a few more H2 forecourts but for sure the price issue wouldn’t be number one on the list.
The BMW X5 FC will combine the drive train from an existing BMW ev model with the fuel cell technology from Toyota - a good template for other manufacturers. 374 BHP so should be a high performance beast as well as low emissions unlike the Mirai which is a lot slower.

BMW X5 fuel cell coming out next year - will be interesting how they price it vs all electric X5. Volume production should lower prices idc. Hybrid battery/fc seems the best option while we wait for more h2 refuelling stations.
Also I think next year or year after le mans will be full of h2 cars toyota are massive at le mans I think 3 teams are already working on a car
The reason plug-in cars arrived first is because every auto OEM first needs to develop and mass manufacture a reliable electric power train. Fuel cell vehicles like the Mirai have the same power electronics drivetrain as plug-in cars, but the energy storage is slightly different. So a fuel cell car fills up with hydrogen that is stored in a tank and is then combined with oxygen in the air to produce electricity that the feeds the drivetrain, with a smaller battery, there are also supercaps as well, and so you have the ultimate hybrid energy storage on the vehicle. Plug-in electric cars rely on the battery, full stop. With refuelling times and range the same as petrol equivalents there is no disruption. All the OEMs have fuel cell strategies, most relying on there being hydrogen refuelling stations before commencing mass volume manufacturing. Look at Germany still building stations, almost 100 now. The no compromise clean emissions for business and society demand fuel cell, it’s the only way to achieve mass and rapid adoption for air quality and decarbonisation of transport.

With you on that Colin, there's a tsunami of wind/solar and tidal power production coming over the hill followed closely by a similar wave of Hydrogen production. And to propose that once a particular solution takes the lead means the race is over is a bit simplistic. I think that the reason Batteries are currently in the lead is because they are currently the only solution. Think back to the time the only diesel car on the market was the black cab. What will be the deciding factor is supplying a car that people want, not being first to the market with a solution you want people to have.

Superb revue in the Saturday Daily Mail of the Toyota Mirai. It mentions the hydrogen filling stations network being created by ITM and suggests that battery powered vehicles are merely a stepping stone to hydrogen power.
