Jaykay, thanks, genuinely relieved to hear that.
Moving on - compared to other oil companies in our league or thereabouts, considering we've held our own pretty well here. Roll on Lincoln and another offload from Lancaster.
Apologies for continuing this off topic but ...
I don't think anyone on here was having a go at Greta, a 16 year old child, per se.
I admire her spirit and considerable courage in undertaking this voyage. What I don't admire and I agree fully with Divecentre and Aduk here, its not really that great to burden a 16 year old with Asperger's to convey a political message. Moreover, if I had a 16 year old daughter with Asperger's there's no way I'd allow her to head out into the Atlantic on a small yacht for two weeks.
Just to be clear I do not in any way condone the obnoxious tweet from the Brexit chap. But somewhere in between the two extremes, it is all getting a bit beyond a joke.
JayKay,
" a 16 year old girl with Aspergers..."
Oh c'mon. Don's swallow that particular bait so easily. Asperger's is a SYNDROME, not a disease. It's a behaviour-pattern, and only recognised by the medical community in such terms in 1981.
A peer in my schooldays exhibited those traits, which unfortunately led to be him being often and cruelly teased. Nevertheless after some years of working as a wage-slave for Barclays, he went on to be managing director of a healthcare company, and now in retirement is a (paid) public speaker on classical music.
Roosevelt wasn't always attracting attention to his wheelchair, was he?
JK
If you stand on a pedestal and preach there are bound to be some who don’t agree with you. Expect the occasional milkshake.
She has chosen to make herself a public figure and should not be exempt from criticism simply because of her age.
I do wonder how she will cope with the hardships of this journey, not that I am concerned or that I wish her ill but it is pretty certain that she will be seasick for long periods. Will there be any revealing stories from crew or are they all bound by a non-disclosure contract.
They did and failed ;-)
Yorkshirelife,
"which society is EVER going to accept that we don't have a god given human right to have as many children as we want?"
Haven't the Chinese tried it?
Adoubleuk: "All this 'saving the planet' stuff is baloney. A euphamism for keeping the planet in a condition where it can sustain the existence of an ever more populous human race. And that's a fairly tall order. When (not if) the human species becomes extinct, 'the planet' won't bat an eyelid. Probably breathe a sigh of relief, instead."
Whilst I disagree with your dim view of Greta (she has - after all - been packaged & publicised by an image hungry world press) she's simply fighting for something she personally believes in. At 16 with aspergers... she could still teach most politicians a thing or two and should be applauded for her efforts).
I do agree in principle with your statement above. The problem is - as always - we skirt around the issues... using global warming / pollution / food shortages / environmental damage etc... etc... when we "all" know that the real issue comes down to one thing, and one thing alone:
increased global human population!
Cure that and you "start" to heal the planet... but which politician...which country...which society is EVER going to accept that we don't have a god given human right to have as many children as we want?
So - as unpalatable as this may sound - you are correct in my opinion... we will become extinct and the planet "will" breath a long sigh of relief when we're gone.
Sad but true IMHO :-(
bartlebobton,
" That is an totally hideous thing to say about a young girl ; extreme in every sense."
What, hoping she gets seasick? Yup, it is rather nasty, I must admit. But at least it'll teach her that her lovely planet ain't all a garden of roses.
Or was it calling her Greta Thumsuck? I bet she's referred to in a lot worse ways in various drilling-rig 'coffee-shops'.
She's a public-figure celebrity these days anyway, so I'll mock her as much as I like. If she can't stand the heat she shouldn't be in the kitchen.
ADUK.... That is an totally hideous thing to say about a young girl ; extreme in every sense. If you have a daughter of that age, would you speak about her in that way. The unfortunate thing is, she can't defend herself against your puerile comments. Show some maturity, dignity and good grace.
ADUK: u losing your touch !
Wellwell said:
"If you are a grown up, fully-fledged adult and you are mocking this young girl for trying to save the planet then I genuinely feel sorry for you. I also think you are incredibly cruel, vicious and ignorant."
I must admit that whoever wished that Greta Thumsuck's boat sinks is taking things a bit far. A midocean shipwreck is not something to be wished on anybody. But personally I do hope the sanctimonious little know-it-all gets seriously seasick.
