I don’t know about this BB but it was hilarious when a Trump supporter on Fox declared that Covid-19 was no big deal because we’d already beaten Covid 1 to 18.
A key vaccine that I have mentioned several times in posts is the Pneumococcal vaccine.
The UK NHS GP's should be checking all patient vaccination records.
THe vaccine is key, children were only given it as a routine vaccine in early 2000's .
There is 55% of the UK population not vaccinated against it and if you have any form of heart disease, Hemocromatosis,Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, its an automatic flag to give it.
THe Pneumococcal vaccine as 26 different strains, the UK Pneumococcal vaccine in 2017 still only covered 14 of the strains.
Any virus infection can lead to MYOCARDITIS thats just one example, it leads to Intersitital lung disease, Kidney Disease.
UK people should also ask for a HIB vaccination if they are over 40, as this vaccination was never given as standard before 1980..
oxford has been extending their subject recruitment today,
actively inviting additional participation from a number of
NHS organisations in particular ... they are looking to recruit
more 18-55 front-line workers, who may be at higher exposure risk.
(i should have said before, the ‘placebo’ /control is itself a vaccine,
but a known and well tested vaccine against adolescent meningitis
and sepsis, usually with very few safety problems, but where there
is no good reason at all to think it would protect against covid19).
Thank you MD. I work as a volunteer at our local hospital and I am surprised the number of staff that don’t get the flue vaccine. I get it each year for the last 15 years or so. I realise it’s hit and miss if the vaccine is the right one for a particular flue virus but personally I’d rather have it than not.
Hope you have a good weekend.
On Sars , it was a severe disease where the symptoms showed in a few days, so it was easier to contain and the outbreak lasted approx 8 months.
Covid symptoms have shown to take 26 days to develop and people carrying the virus have been asymptomatic making infection easier to others.
Sars as never re occured , and in reality , that is perhaps down to how well it was contained due to the virus effects being so severe , it could not be missed.
Mers virus was Virus was and still occurs in Saudi Arabia, most down to poor hygine. THe reasons for no vaccine for Sars was down to no body wanting to fund a vaccine when it lasted 8 months and as never been seen again, but a few Infectious disease doctors did and worked on it.
THis COVID 19 virus is different due to it slow progression in people, so slow millions of cases may have been missed with Doctors assuming it was seasonal flu.
China started working on the strains of Covid 19 in January and shared everything with others countries and WHO, so even if the numbers of infections drop, it wont hinder any company working on a avaccine, so I dont understand Oxford consortium =Jenner professor saying not enough people.
The Virus is so hard to detect by Doctors in General Practice or Internal Medicine , that testing will become a routine event for years to come.
Testing will still be carried out until everyone world wide is vaccinated and then you may get anew strain of Coronavirus..
Vaccine. Once a company or group of companies find one that actually works, they will share that detail with every Vaccine maker.
In 2009 H1N1 was made teh usual way and grown in plants, the atter took only 30 days to produce 1.5 million doses, I know that is small number, but it showed how a vaccine can be made by alternative routes.
The big issue is going to be the side effec's of a vaccine, the death rate from the Vaccine it's self, who gets priority in the case of underlying health conditions.
Work stated 3 months ago in Asia on giving people the Polio vaccine on the Tongue , and that is not a cure , but as shown to help protect people.
THe UK needs to explain how each vaccine works, (ie) existing vaccines and get the take up numbers up. Only 48% of NHS workers HAVE A SEASONAL flu vaccine.
Well to be fair to south Korea it is only in the Seol area the schools are closing i believe. This is going to be the way of the world as pockets will always flair up in county's. What will annoy but not surprise me will be our media screaming its way to dangerous opening any schools ! and look at the catastrophy in South Korea etc with no reference to Denmark or Germany who have had few problems .In a nut shell the uk has to accept certain towns or regions will be opened and closed as required in future otherwise we will all be hiding behind the sofa for the rest of our lives unless there is a CV19 Cure .Anyway yet another Friday profit taking day where most shares and sectors are sold off. Have a good weekend everyone .
Yes your right spikeyj, I don’t think they will run out of volunteers though. What I don’t understand is how there can be different vaccines from different companies for covid 19. Assuming some come through. I Dont understand the science behind it.
Let’s hope someone comes up with a vaccine as South Korea having recently opened up schools have had to close again due to outbreak.
Still I suppose we will get local outbreaks for the foreseeable future.
seaking, issue is not about them doing the study in an unusual way, just
about whether the study has adequate sample size /sufficiently powered.
for sure, the trial is still under way, and has not been
abandoned, so yes, let’s all hope that it does bear fruit.
How many people on here actually know what covid-19 stands for. Food for thought for those who get my meaning! Rhetoric means nothing.
That’s the way it’s always done.
Disagree with what’s been put out by the media. The imminent results of the first trial by AstraZeneca/ Jenner / Oxford uni, will be put out as an Rns tomorrow or maybe over the weekend.
Let’s All hope it’s good.
oxford uni has been caught out by how quickly this first wave
of covid19 has died down in the UK. if they had anticipated,
then they could have adjusted by recruiting bigger sample size.
countries will vary in the prevalence rates of virus in the community.
currently, a pharma company based in brazil or russia would have a
better chance of getting its subjects infected than one based in the UK.
( it would be different of course if pharma companies were allowed
to deliberately infect their human subjects in order to test the vaccine.)
Well is that not the same case/problem for any pharma company in the world testing their final vaccine for real ? that's what I don't understand, why is Oxford in any worse position to everyone else in field testing ? .
issue for the oxford uni people, they’ve given half their test subjects
a placebo, and half their test subjects a (candidate) vaccine - now they
need to wait & see if the half of their subjects that got the real vaccine
do any better (or worse) than the ones with placebo. but if very very
few of the subjects get exposed to the virus while they go about their
daily lives, then very few of them will get ill anyway, and statistically
they probably wouldn’t be able to tell if there is a significant difference
between the ones with placebo vs ones with the candidate vaccine.
for the statistics to work, they need a fair few
to encounter the virus in the community.
On a lighter note perhaps they should put Bob Geldoff in charge of the CV19 fight, he could bang all the necessary Pharma and world leader heads together to work as one !!! Just find me a F***g Vaccine Now !!!
I appreciate you need probably far more than a Billion doses once you know you have a viable product/Vaccine and the world too supply.. But SARS is a coronavirus and they still have no vaccine for that ? .It seems and extraordinary waste of money in the hope there is a vaccine at the end of the rainbow .By all means go hell for leather once you have a very strong likelihood of a working vaccine but at the moment everyone seems to be always only just 5 minutes away but never arrive.I cant even work out why the oxford Uni vaccine is now allegedly floundering due to a low CV19 infection rate ? , that was the big hope only a few weeks ago .I hope they find a cure ASAP but just don't weaken GSK in the process.
This is standard, it's not unusual . Moderna and Lonza have already made 500,000 doses.
No pharma company will wait to see if the vaccine works, they make as they go along, or else it would take more time. How many vaccines do you need to vaccinate the world, it will take a couple of years when and if they have a vaccine.
H1N1 vaccine was developed in a short time span.
Coronavirus was first identified in 1964, so the world decided against following up the same way they did with others vaccines.
Keep an eye on Sanofi, they have got $21 billion to spend on M/A , so anything that fits in there portfolio for around 4 to 5 $ billion they will buy.
GSK will expand more into the Autoimmune areas, as this is where the real money is made, because its a life long condition, Cancer is not in most cases..
I don't want to sound negative but what on earth do you do with a Billion doses if no vaccine is found ??? !!! which is quite probable and I assume it will have a shelf life ? out of interest what does a billion doses of something which may never be used actually cost to manufacture ? Again don't want to sound negative but there is a lot of cart before the horse and hollow promises going on in the world of pharma and CV19 at the moment. Concentrating on a cure for cancer or a new Horlicks drink may prove more lucrative to share holders of GSK .
This gives GSK a toehold in any Pharma bio company that hopefully comes up with a vaccine besides their own developing vaccine candidate.
GlaxoSmithKline is to scale up production of its COVID-19 vaccine booster to a billion doses by 2021 to support development of several potential jabs.
Adjuvants, which boost the immune response caused by a vaccine, could be important should one of the many potential vaccines against the SARS-CoV-2 virus make it through clinical trials.
Demand for any successful vaccine will be immense and in order to meet global demands it will be important to use small amounts of vaccine protein to ensure there is enough to go round.
Adjuvants can also enhance the immune response and have been shown to create a stronger and longer-lasting immunity against infections.
Sanofi has partnered with several different pharmas and biotechs producing potential vaccines against COVID-19.
These include France’s Sanofi and China’s Xiamen Innovex, after CEO Emma Walmsley pledged to make the adjuvant technology available at a summit at the White House involving the world’s pharma leaders and president Donald Trump at the beginning of March.
Confirmation of the enhanced manufacturing capacity follows completion of a review conducted across the company’s global supply network. GSK will manufacture, fill and finish the adjuvant for use in COVID-19 vaccines at sites in the UK, US, Canada and Europe.
GSK has decided to scale up manufacturing of the adjuvant at risk as there are no vaccines approved to treat COVID-19.
It is in talks with governments and global institutions about funding for production and supply of the adjuvant.
The company says it does not expect to profit from sales of its portfolio of collaborations for COVID-19 vaccines during the pandemic phase of the COVID-19 outbreak.
Profit generated will be invested in support of coronavirus related research and long-term pandemic preparedness, either through GSK’s internal investments, or with external partners.
It added that it is committed to making the adjuvant available to people across the world. This could include donations to the world’s poorest countries, and will work with governments and institutions to prioritise access.
According to a regularly-updated document maintained by the World Health Organization, there are 10 vaccines in clinical trials for COVID-19, and 115 in preclinical development.
Its very good PR but there have been loads of Pharma companies chasing cures for Sars , Aids and the common cold etc etc etc for many decades and there have been Potentially Billions of Dollars profit at stake. I do hope a cure vaccine is found for CV19 ASAP but it does bug me when media say a cure will be found and rolled out by September etc etc . Our own CEO has said quite clearly If and its a bloody BIG IF , IF a valid vaccine is found and proved it will still take over 12-18 months to get to market cutting every corner possible !!. Its also a big money pit for those that fail, no prizes for second place so to speak and im sure there will be loads of PC correct mumbo jumbo that we are all doing it for the common good , and must give free vaccine away to half the planet, and we dont want a penny profit made by anybody involved in a CV19 vacinne .So on the plus side there will be loads of kudos and a warm feeling being involved but if you are hard nosed and want max profits for dividends it is probably a drain and big distraction from other markets GSK needs to concentrate on .Sounds callous but I think its true.
